Samsung caught: smartphones are made slower on purpose
Anyone who buys a high-end smartphone that is marketed with high performance actually expects that this can also be accessed. This is not the case on Samsung smartphones when using certain applications. The company has now launched an investigation.
Samsung smartphones throttle 10,000 apps
Smartphone manufacturers such as OnePlus have already reduced the performance of certain applications in the past and have thus fallen flat on their face. It is therefore very surprising that Samsung is now doing the same. Samsung throttles the performance of 10,000 apps via the "Game Optimizing Service", which is actually supposed to optimize performance in games. There you can also find normal apps like Instagram, TikTok and Netflix, but also apps from Samsung itself. Interestingly, benchmarks are excluded, so that the maximum performance can be achieved in performance tests, which is not made available in the apps.
But how big is the difference? A Korean YouTuber renamed the benchmark 3DMark and installed it as Genshin Impact on a Samsung smartphone (source: YouTube). The game is throttled according to the list. The result is amazing. Only 1141 points are achieved in throttled mode, while the result is 2618 points without throttle.
Why is Samsung doing this? OnePlus defended itself by wanting to improve user experience and increase battery life. In the end, the company caved in and let smartphone owners decide whether they want this choke. According to Naver, Samsung has so far only confirmed that an investigation will be launched. How the South Korean company wants to talk its way out of this is not known. Accidentally fails to install a list of 10,000 apps intentionally throttled on Samsung phones.

Not all Samsung smartphones are equally affected
It is also currently unknown in which countries Samsung is throttling Android apps and games on its smartphones and which models are affected. For example, according to AndroidAuthority, the Galaxy S21 Plus is affected in the US, but not the Galaxy S22 Plus. The Galaxy S22 is affected in South Korea, because the test was carried out there on the new smartphone. So it will be interesting to see how Samsung plans to explain the problem. We have asked and are expecting an official statement.
