Android March 2022 patch and new feature drop available for Pixel phones

The first Monday of the month has once again brought us a new update for Google's Pixel phones. This month brings not only a new security patch, but also a new feature drop for the Pixel smartphones.

The Google Pixel March 2022 update will be rolled out to the Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, Pixel 5 and Pixel 5a starting today. You'll notice there was no mention of the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, and that's because they're once again getting their updates "later this month." So it's time to wait longer again.

Google has new Android 12.0.0 build numbers for the Pixel 5a (SP2A.220305.12), Pixel 5 (SP2A.220305.12), Pixel 4a 5G (SP2A.220305.12), Pixel 4a (SP2A.220305.12), Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL (SP2A.220305.12) and Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL (SP2A.220305.12) released. When the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro get the update, it will be build SP2A.220305.013.A3.

If you own a Google Pixel phone that is still supported, you now not only get security and bug fixes, but also new features with the feature drop. These new features include new widgets, live captions in new locations, Night Sight in Snapchat, and more.

March 2022 Pixel feature drop

  • Pixel Battery Widget: The battery widget is here! The new Pixel battery widget shows you current battery information for Bluetooth-connected devices. It can expand to cover the entire home screen or shrink to fit the space.
  • At a Glance major update: The At a Glance widget at the top of the main screen (and on the lock screen) is getting a major update that includes information such as the battery level of Bluetooth devices, a countdown for the Personal Security app's security check ', reminders to turn off alarms and more.
  • Live captions on calls: When calling, you can now activate live caption and see what the other person is saying to you. You can even reply using the keyboard if you can't speak.
  • YouTube and app sharing in Duo: When Samsung introduced the Galaxy S22, Google announced that Duo was getting a neat new feature that lets you share YouTube or other apps. Now this feature is being extended to the Pixel phones.
  • Gboard's Custom Car Stickers: With the latest version of Gboard on your Pixel phone, you can type a message and then choose from custom stickers that are automatically created based on what you've just typed. For example, if you typed "Happy Birthday Steve," you should get new stickers that actually say "Happy Birthday Steve." Pretty cool.
  • Live Translate in Spanish: Live Translate is extended to Spanish on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
  • Night Sight in Snapchat: Continuing its strong relationship with Snapchat, Google now offers Night Sight in the Snapchat camera app on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. That means better night photos and videos when you use the Snapchat camera app to capture those life moments. Just look for the moon icon in the camera to activate it.
  • New Curated Culture wallpapers: This month's new Curated Culture wallpapers include three papers by Manjit Thapp, a UK illustrator. This continues to celebrate International Women's Day. The three wallpapers can be seen at the top of this post.

As part of this month's feature drops, Google is also expanding previously released features to other devices and languages:

  • Direct My Call and Wait Times are now available on Pixel 3a and later.
  • The Recorder app now transcribes Italian and Spanish on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
  • Google Assistant Quick Phrases are now available on the Pixel 6 in Spanish, Italian and French.
