After 7 years: Ancient cell phone receives new Android update

If you value long software updates, you have to get an iPhone - that's the popular opinion. A relatively unknown manufacturer is currently proving that this is not always the case. A real ancient cell phone has now received a new Android update after 7 years.

When it comes to long-term software support, Apple sets the bar very high. For example, the iPhone 6s recently received the update to iOS 15, although the cell phone was launched in 2015. Only one manufacturer from the Android camp can keep up: Fairphone .

Fairphone 2 gets update to Android 10 after 7 years

The Dutch company of the same name launched the Fairphone 2 in 2015 , back then with Android 5.1. Over the next few years, the Fairphone was constantly supplied with further software updates. 2017 saw Android 6, followed by Android 7 the following year. Android 10 was released in 2021 after a long beta phase - and now the rollout of Android 11 has been announced on Twitter:

"Seven years of software support - a first for an Android smartphone," says Fairphone proudly. Even if Android 11 is already outdated and the successor is approaching us in big strides , the Dutch can actually pat themselves on the back .

Not even the update leader Samsung can keep up with such a long software support .
