Nowadays, a camera hump on the back of the iPhone or other mobile phones from Samsung, Xiaomi and Co. is considered "state of the art". But do we really have to get used to such unaesthetic proliferations of technology? I don't think the camera hump on smartphones needs to die. At Apple, for example, it started in 2016 with the iPhone 7 Plus, whose dual camera Apple didn't pack in two individual lenses, but in a single bump on the back of the cell phone. This "hill" clearly stood out optically. Over the years, this area and thus the camera hump has become larger and larger , not only because even more lenses demanded their place. A glance at the iPhone 13 Pro is enough - the camera area has never been more voluminous.

Camera bumps on smartphones: does it have to be?

The "camera wart" thus became a design feature and now adorns almost all smartphones with rank and name. Neither Apple, Samsung nor Xiaomi and Co. make an exception. I find this very unfortunate, what happened to the idea of ​​a restrained design? These monstrosities of product design literally scream in your face: Look how big mine is. "Specialists" used to stick ugly spoilers on nice cars, but nowadays we find their equivalent in the form of a camera hump on smartphones – yuck.

Apple started with the iPhone 7 Plus, although not every cell phone had a real camera hump at the time:

Now, one or the other person interested in technology may remind that there are good reasons for this current design language. After all, the optics have also become larger, but you don't want to do without slim smartphones. The camera hump becomes a stopgap solution ... there's no other way. But is that really the case?

Do you really always have to indulge in the obsession with being slim? As far as I'm concerned, smartphones are welcome to have something on their ribs. By the way, not only for a no-frills look. Such a design also has tangible advantages, since you could integrate more of the battery, which of course has a positive effect on the runtime. Our readers were also enthusiastic about this idea last year. Quite a few explicitly wanted an iPhone without a camera hump for the future, but with more battery capacity . So far, however, the industry has largely ignored this wish.

Because soon this attitude could change a bit. According to all appearances and the well-informed sources of the rumor mill, Samsung will start next Wednesday (February 9, 2022). The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra should do without a dedicated camera hump. This makes for a nice back and enough space for the retractable stylus and a larger battery. Unfortunately, Samsung is sticking with the other two models of the S22, which means that they end up having to live with significantly less capacity - somehow inconsistent. Nevertheless, the Koreans prove that it is also possible without the ugly "hill" on the back of the smartphone.
