Samsung is adapting a Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ display specification
Shortly after the launch, Samsung changed information about a feature of the Galaxy S22 and S22+. It turns out that the AMOLED screen's variable refresh rate cannot go below 48 Hz. The information about the variable frequency of the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra remains unchanged.
The Galaxy S22's variable refresh rate isn't that low after all
When Samsung presented the new Galaxy S22 series last week, a lot of emphasis was placed on the most important technical details. Processor, battery, cameras, but also design and updates were discussed extensively. But many also paid attention to the little ones, such as the refresh rate of the display of the S22 models. Samsung also seems to have made subtle improvements compared to the S21 series.
Last year, the Galaxy S21 and S21+ had an AMOLED screen with a variable refresh rate from 48 to 120Hz. The Galaxy S21 Ultra can even lower this frequency to 10Hz if the displayed content allows it.
At the launch of the Galaxy S22 models, Samsung added that the S22 and S22+ will have a minimum refresh rate of 10Hz this year. The S22 Ultra can even display an image down to 1Hz, for example when displaying static content.
As it turns out, the South Koreans were a bit hasty with the details on the Galaxy S22 and S22+. Samsung has now adjusted the official specs on its own press portal. The devices cannot lower the refresh rate further than 48 Hz. This does not apply to the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which - if it makes sense - can only refresh the image once per second.
Consequence?
Of course, the difference between a 10Hz and 48Hz frame rate isn't something you'll see or notice immediately with the naked eye. But especially with a cell phone like the Galaxy S22, the difference in energy consumption can be relevant. Due to the relatively modest battery capacity (3,700 mAh), the low refresh rate was precisely one of the possible "savings" that can help the device achieve good battery life.
With its battery with a capacity of 4,500 mAh, the Galaxy S22+ already has more leeway and is therefore less dependent on all individual savings to still achieve good battery life.
