Samsung Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra: 45 watt charging makes no real difference
Samsung's Galaxy S22 series finally brought an increase in charging speeds. The Samsung Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra are said to offer 45W wired charging speeds, while the regular Galaxy S22 still relies on the 25W of its predecessor.
In recent years, the loading speed has developed rapidly. Even mid-range cell phones now have 65 watts of charging power, while flagships from Xiaomi and Vivo have already exceeded the 100 watt threshold.
While 45 watts isn't a big deal anymore, it's at least a big step forward for Samsung. Unfortunately, it turns out that even those 45 watts only exist in marketing materials, so it won't matter.
So how do the all-new Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra stack up in terms of charging speeds? GSMArena tested the two devices with three chargers - the original Samsung chargers (45 watts and 25 watts) and a third-party PD charger (65 watts). The two Samsung chargers support both Power Delivery (PD) and PPS (Programmable Power Supply) standards, while the third-party solution is only PD-certified.
The Samsung Galaxy S22+ with the 25 watt charger from Samsung reached a charge of 62 percent after 30 minutes, with the 45 watt charger it is only 64 percent. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra achieved 61 percent after 30 minutes with the 25 watt charger and 60 percent with the 45 watt charger. The 65-watt third-party PD charger managed to charge the Ultra's battery to 65 percent in the same amount of time.
A full charge of the Samsung Galaxy S22+ took 1:01 hours with the 45 watt charger and just a minute longer with the 25 watt charger. A full charge of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with the 25 watt charger took exactly 1:04 hours, while the 45 watt charger completed the task just 5 minutes faster at 59 minutes. The third-party 65-watt PD charger took 1:02 hours.
What does that mean? The charging power of 45 W specified by Samsung is simply misleading, because even in connection with the original Samsung charger, it does not offer any really tangible advantages in terms of charging times compared to the 25 watt solution.
Two important conclusions can be drawn from this. First, if charging speed is important to you, the Galaxy S22 series will be just as disappointing as the Samsung flagships that came hr ago. Similar to the past two years, it takes an hour to fully charge the device.
The second reason is that there is no point in shelling out $50 for Samsung's 45-watt charger when you're getting the Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra. The 25 watt charger works just as well.
