Apple wants to sink the iPhone and could succeed in doing so
Excuse me, Apple wants to sink the iPhone? This quite provocative formulation can be taken literally in the current case. The manufacturer is demonstrably working on a new idea. If it works, the mobile phone could also be used under water in the future.
Evidence of this can be found in a recently published patent by Apple, the idea was originally submitted in the summer of 2020. There are also references to Apple's efforts in earlier patents (source: Patently Apple).
iPhone under water: Apple is working on it
Specifically, it's about a communication system that also works under water, for example in the sea or in a lake . Things such as acoustic (sonar) and/or optical communication techniques could then also be used for this purpose. Apple also distinguishes between wireless aerial communication (overwater mode) and wireless underwater communication.
While the patent doesn't name the iPhone, "the electronic device" looks a lot like it. A kind of touchscreen is recognizable and even a home button if you ask us. Of course, it could also be an underwater housing for the iPhone, if you think about it further. The patent also mentions a "buoy". It floats on the water surface and in the end probably acts like a router for the devices below the water surface, according to our interpretation of the rather abstract document.
And what is all this for? In certain situations, for example, divers could be alerted to dangers. Special mention is made of short action and information notes on the display, quote: "Help!", "Here!", "Up!", "Down!", "Hai!". An interesting approach that, if implemented successfully, could lead to success and probably even save lives.
In the meantime, use this:
Apple's own diving goggles
But Apple's considerations don't end there, the patent specification also includes the idea of diving goggles. In contrast to "normal" diving aids, Apple's variant integrates a small HUD, a head-up display.
Important information can thus be displayed directly in the user's field of vision. In short: Apple is not only working on AR glasses for "land use", the oceans are also no longer safe from the iPhone manufacturer's efforts in this area. Important and worth mentioning: Although such patents underline Apple's will to innovate, it is not yet certain that implementation of the ideas is guaranteed. Only time will ultimately tell.
