US ban circumvented? Huawei and Nokia are jointly building Android smartphones

The Chinese manufacturer Huawei is subject to a US ban, which means that the company can no longer access all technologies and has problems in the production of smartphones. This US ban has now been lifted somewhat via a joint venture - or so it seems.

Huawei and Nokia are selling the TD Tech N8 Pro with 5G

While Huawei itself has extreme difficulties getting 5G modems to build into new smartphones, the TD Tech N8 Pro doesn't seem to have a problem with it. TD Tech sounds like an unknown China manufacturer at first, but it isn't. It is a joint venture between Huawei and Nokia that was founded in 2005 and sells network solutions. Now you have the TD Tech N8 Pro in the range, which some retailers even sell as a Huawei cell phone (source: Notebookcheck).

The TD Tech N8 Pro is not a new development, just a copy of the Huawei Nova 8 Pro, which was presented a year ago. At that time, Huawei was already subject to the US ban, so it is very surprising that suddenly this TD Tech N8 Pro has a 5G modem , while new models such as the Nova 9 and Nova 8i with 4G modems are coming onto the market. It seems reasonable to assume that Huawei is somewhat leveraging the ban on the USA through its joint venture with Nokia.

Technically, the smartphone is not quite up to date. For example, a Kirin 985 is installed. That could also be a reason why this Android smartphone has a 5G processor. It is quite possible that Huawei still has many of them in stock and does not want to install them in new models . Of course, there are no Google services and apps here, because the Huawei Nova 8 Pro came onto the market when the US ban was already in place and was therefore not certified by Google.

What do Nokia and Huawei want to prove with the smartphone?

So all in all a very curious situation and one kind of wonders what Huawei and Nokia are actually up to. The smartphone is basically from the end of 2020 and still costs the equivalent of over 500 euros . Why not sell the Huawei Nova 8 Pro straight away and rely on an unknown label instead? It will be exciting to see if TD Tech will take over more Huawei phones in the future.
