{Disarmed} Sony PlayStation 5 gets massive update

Sony PlayStation 5

The Sony PlayStation 5 gets a massive update from today. This brings a number of innovations and improvements for the NextGen game console. New features include the 3D sound for TV speakers and the SSD extension.

The update includes a number of improvements for the PS5 as well as 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers. It also offers an M.2 SSD storage expansion, with which players can store and play PS5 games, PS4 games and media apps directly on the expanded storage.

In addition, mobile functionality will be expanded by supporting PS Remote Play over mobile networks and offering the possibility to watch screen broadcasts on the PS app from Thursday, September 23rd.

September PS5 System Software Update Features

PS5 UX improvements

The September update for the PS5 features new UX enhancements that will make it easier than ever for players to view, personalize and manage their game content and console experience:

  • Adjustment of the control center. Players can now design their control center more freely by rearranging the controls at the bottom of the screen or choosing which ones to show or hide.
  • Improved game base. Players can now easily view messages and write to friends and parties directly from the Game Base in the Control Center.
  • New features in the game library and on the home screen. If you have PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they will now be individually visible on the Installed tab of the game library and on the home screen. The tile of each game now clearly shows its platform.
  • Screen reader controls. The players can now pause or continue the screen reader (press "PS + triangle key") and have everything it reads out again (press "PS + R1 key").

New customization options for gaming and social experiences

  • Resolution selection and connection test tool on PlayStation Now. PlayStation Now subscribers can choose between 720p and 1080p (depending on the game) to set their preferred video resolution for streaming games. Thanks to a streaming connection test, you can also identify and fix any problems with your connection.
  • New award type: "Leader". Following an online game, players can award other players the fourth type of award, "Leader", which is visible on player profiles.
  • Automatic recording of "personal bests". As players compete for a better time or higher score and achieve a new personal best, an in-game video clip is automatically recorded. Players can also share clips of their personal bests directly from the challenge map in the Control Center or through their media gallery. Players have direct control over this feature through the settings for recordings and broadcasts.
  • New trophy tracker. We've added a new trophy tracker that allows players to quickly access up to five trophies per game from the Control Center.

3D audio support for built-in TV speakers

With the September update to PS5, players can experience 3D audio through their built-in TV speakers. As soon as this function is activated in the "Sound" menu, it converts the standard two-channel audio playback of the TV into three-dimensional sound, thus ensuring an even more intense gameplay experience. Players can measure the acoustics of their room with the microphone in their DualSense wireless controllers to apply the 3D audio setting optimized for their room.

3D audio through compatible headsets on PS5 is a popular feature among fans and developers. We are therefore very pleased that, in addition to the headset support that has been available since the market launch, we can now also make this function available to gamers directly via the integrated TV speakers.

In addition, players with a Pulse 3D wireless headset now have access to the equalizer settings in the Sound Settings, which they can use to adjust the sound profile according to their preferences.

M.2 SSD storage expansion

Starting today, PS5 players around the world can expand their storage capacity with an M.2 SSD - a high-speed solid state drive that can be installed in the PS5 console or the PS5 Digital Edition console.

Once installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console, the M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games as well as media apps. You can play PS5 and PS4 games directly from the M.2 SSD storage and move games freely between storage options.

Important: M.2 SSDs must meet the minimum performance and size requirements described on this page . Using an M.2 SSD also requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure (e.g. a heat sink) that meets the dimensional requirements. Please read the above linked page carefully before purchasing an M.2 SSD or cooling structure for use with PS5 .

Improvements for the PS Remote Play app and the PS app

  • PS Remote Play app over mobile networks
    • The PS Remote Play app allows gamers to remotely stream and play PS4 and PS5 games, switch between games, and browse their console menus on any compatible device connected to their broadband network. *** Now, Players using the mobile app for iOS and Android will also use a cellular data connection when WiFi is not available.
    • A broadband internet connection of at least 5 Mbps is required for PS Remote Play. For an optimal experience, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 15 Mbit / s.
    • To manage the amount of data consumed over a mobile connection, players can choose their preferred video quality for mobile data streaming.
    • Please note that the quality and connectivity of your remote play experience may vary depending on the network operator and network environment.
  • View screen broadcasts in the PS app
    • Starting next Thursday, September 23rd, a PS App update will be rolled out worldwide, giving users the opportunity to watch their friends' screen broadcasts together.
    • To do this, you'll need to join a party voice chat on your mobile device with a friend who is playing on a PS5 console. Then ask your friend playing on PS5 if they would like to start their screen sharing. Note: Screen sharing can only be broadcast by players on PS5.
    • The Android version of the update will be released gradually, which is why it can take a week before the update is available on your mobile device.
