High resolution and HDR technology within Netflix will be officially supported in the new version of Safari in macOS 11 Big Sur , when it will be officially released in autumn 2020. Thanks to this, users will not have to use a browser other than system.

There is only one snag: to play HDR (and Dolby Vision) video in Safari, you must have a Mac manufactured in 2018 or newer. Older generations of Apple devices will not be able to take advantage of this novelty and in their cases customers will be stuck with HD resolution and SDR mode.

It is possible that Apple made this move to guard against further accusations of abusing its position and seeking a monopoly. After last year's premiere of Apple TV +, the Cupertino company finally became a direct competitor of Netflix and other video-on-demand services.

In turn, Netflix is ​​not the only video on demand service Apple has recently apologized to.
