How does the iPhone SE camera compare to other iPhones? We checked it out

iPhone SE tempts with an affordable price and the fact ... it is an iPhone. However, many people wonder how the camera falls out against the background of more expensive constructions. We decided to check it out.

Taking the opportunity that we have several iPhones in the editorial office, we decided to check how the camera of the latest iPhone SE looks against them. For comparison, we used:

  • iPhone SE (2020),
  • iPhone XS (the main camera is the same as on the iPhone XR),
  • iPhone 11 Pro.

I regret it, but this time we were unable to join the iPhone 8 list. Maybe we will succeed in the next text.

How does the iPhone SE camera compare to other iPhones?

iPhone SE has only one lens. The camera parameters are as follows:

  • 12 megapixel matrix (diagonal is not known),
  • optically stabilized lens with f / 1.8 aperture and focal length 3.99 mm (equivalent to 28 mm).

And this is how the iPhone 8 camera looks like:

  • matrix with a resolution of 12 megapixels and a diagonal of 1/3 inch, a single pixel size 1., 2 μm,
  • optically stabilized lens with f / 1.8 aperture and focal length 3.99 mm (equivalent to 28 mm).

For comparison, here are the parameters of the iPhone XR camera and the main cameras on the iPhone XS and 11 Pro:

  • matrix with a resolution of 12 megapixels and a diagonal of 1 / 2.55 inches, a single pixel size of 1.4 µm,
  • optically stabilized lens with f / 1.8 aperture and 4.25 mm focal length (equivalent to 26 mm).

As you can see, in terms of parameters, the iPhone SE camera is probably the same module that we already know from the iPhone 8.

Let's remember, however, that in photography (especially the mobile one) the components themselves are only half of the puzzle, and the other half is the software. This is clearly seen on the example of the iPhone XS and 11 Pro, which also share the same components of the main camera, and yet the newer model makes definitely better, sharper and more detailed photos.

For this reason, I regret that we could not compare the iPhone SE to the Eight , but I checked to what extent the new SE stands out from much more expensive XS models (and thus also XR) and 11 Pro.

The iPhone SE camera has much less detail than the cameras of more expensive iPhones.

In all photos in comparison iPhone SE is on the left.

The first test is a photo of a cat. The coat is a great way to compare the detail of the cameras. Let's look at how the iPhone SE compares with the iPhone 11 Pro.

On the approximation we see a very significant difference in favor of the iPhone 11 Pro. The photo from the iPhone SE is soft, has less details and lower contrast. The coat begins to merge into one whole. The same effect can be seen in comparison with the iPhone XS.

iPhone SE also generates photos with much weaker colors.

Photos from the iPhone SE fall against the background of rivals ... pale. Literally and figuratively. The colors are less saturated, making the photos look as if they were taken by fog. This is the comparison between SE and XS.

And below is an enlargement of a fragment of a comparative photo from an iPhone 11 Pro. The color of the streetcar says it all. Grass and leaves are also much less saturated with the iPhone SE.

In the low light, the iPhone SE is doing ... quite well.

The iPhone SE gives in the dark very similar results to the iPhone XS. The photos differ slightly in white balance and noise structure, but in both cases the noise looks quite average. Both cameras generate a very similar level of detail.

The iPhone 11 Pro looks much better, which can also be seen from the photo parameters. The camera is not afraid to enter the ISO 1000 sensitivity (while SE has limited to ISO 640), and even at such sensitivity it gives less noisy and much more detailed image. Just look at the legibility of the inscriptions on the packaging.

Selfie photos from the iPhone SE look good at first glance, but lose when enlarged.

This is the comparison of detail with the iPhone 11 Pro.

The iPhone 8 camera looks like a device from a few years ago, although this is not always a disadvantage.

I have selected the above examples to highlight the differences between smartphone cameras as much as possible. However, the differences are not always so visible. In many photos - especially those made in a good light - iPhone SE does not differ from much more expensive rivals.

It is a pity that the iPhone SE did not get the camera known from the iPhone XR (and hence the iPhone XS), but Apple clearly recognized that equipment costing PLN 2,199 cannot compete with more expensive models. This is also seen in the software issue. Although the iPhone SE is based on the top A13 Bionic processor, Apple has bumped into the night mode application as well as the Deep Fusion mode .

However, iPhone SE users have not been completely on ice. Apple did not regret the Smart HDR mode, as well as the portrait mode, including support for simulations of different types of lighting.

To sum up, the iPhone SE camera is a slight disappointment after all.

You can see that this construction is already a few years old. If on your smartphone you care about the camera and you can spend about 2,000 on your equipment PLN, iPhone SE will be an average choice. The Android camp has a lot more to offer in terms of image quality at this price.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 will provide better photos for around PLN 2,000. And if we decide on older devices, the choice of smartphones with (much!) Better camera increases significantly and includes, for example, Honor 20 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S9, or Huaweia P30 .
