Only one company can take such a camera. The new Leica M10 Monochrome is another German manufacturer's approach to a camera that can only take black and white photos. After Leice M Monochrom from 2012 and after the Stealth variant from 2018, the time has come for a new generation.

The heart of the camera is a completely new matrix with a resolution of 40 megapixels. Leica claims that it was created from scratch with a view to black and white photos. The matrix has a new base ISO sensitivity that has been reduced from ISO 320 to ISO 160.

The matrix was the inspiration for the whole camera design. Leica M10 Monochrome obviously clutches with the company tradition, but at the same time all colored elements have disappeared from the housing. This means that the extremely characteristic red dot has also disappeared. Still, the camera cannot be mistaken for any other make. It is Leica made of flesh and blood, and maybe even one of the company's most traditional camera representatives.

Why actually give up the color? The answer is simple.

On the one hand, the black and white matrix in a straight line refers to the company's tradition. Leica cameras were a tool in the hands of reportage fathers, who documented the world on black and white film.

On the other hand, the black and white matrix means a different, much simpler sensor design. The matrix does not contain Bayer mesh, which in a standard camera creates color by extrapolating individual cells. The lack of Bayer mesh allows you to opt out of the low-pass filter without any consequences. This allows better quality black and white images, including greater sharpness and better tonal range.

In addition, apart from the technical aspect, getting rid of color in today's reality is not only a sentimental decision. It is also an artistic medium for photographers. Black and white photos play on a completely different note than colorful. When we lose color, we must focus on other elements of the image: contrast, shapes, chiaroscuro. Some frames look much better in black and white, but others without color lose a lot. This makes Leica M10 Monochrome not a camera for everyone. It is rather another tool in the arsenal of a conscious (and wealthy) photographer.
