Panasonic S1H is a camera ... with a fan. Thanks to this, he records in 6K

The Panasonic S1H just presented wants to be not only a camera, but even a movie camera. The specification, at the forefront with 6K recording, is impressive, and all this is possible thanks to ... a fan.

If I were to describe in one word what the Panasonic S1 full frame mirrorless line is, I would say that it is uncompromising. Both the Panasonic S1 and S1R can be compared to top SLRs with a mirror chamber cut out. The cameras are armored and do not pretend to be filigree. They are also very well thought out. Above all, they have excellent specifications and equally good image quality.

Panasonic S1 is a general purpose camera. S1R is a professional variant, created for people who require very high resolution. In turn, the Panasonic Lumix S1H just presented is a filming-oriented version

The first thing that catches the eye is the remodeled S1H housing. It has its own fan.

Panasonic S1 and S1R were just the right size, but S1H is entering a whole new level. Although we are still dealing with mirrorless full frame, the design resembles a more medium format. Everything because of the fan that enlarges the body. Yes, we are talking about the fan, not the heat sink itself.

According to the first reports, the fan is practically inaudible. However, no one will record sound with the built-in microphones in this class of camera, so even if there is minimal fan noise, this should not be a problem.

The advantage of this system, however, is huge, because firstly, the camera is not to heat up completely, and secondly, Panasonic is so sure that it has removed the recording time limit. It is worth adding that the housing is completely sealed against the effects of dust, dirt and moisture, and the camera's skeleton is of course made of metal alloys. There was also a screen tilted 180 degrees.

The full-frame CMOS matrix has a resolution of 24.2 megapixels, so it allows 6K image recording. However, this is not a 6K market standard, but a variation on a theme .

6K movies are here recorded with the entire surface of the stabilized matrix (i.e. in 3: 2 format) at a resolution of 5952 x 3968 pixels, in 24 fps. Meanwhile, the 6K cinema standard is exactly 6144 x 3456 pixels. Panasonic has more horizontal lines (great news in post-production!), But fewer vertical lines.

It is worth noting that the full-fledged 6K recording standard appeared in the recently-shown BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, equipped with a Super35 matrix (the cinema equivalent of APS-C). It is this design that will be the main competitor of Panasonic S1H.

Returning to the new full frame, the Panasonic S1H matrix has a tonal range of up to 14 degrees EV and uses the Dual Native ISO mechanism. As a result, we have two native ISO sensitivities, one optimized for tonal range, and the other for noise in low light.

Records are also available in 16: 9 format, but the resolution drops to 5.9K, while the frame rate increases to 30 fps. The camera also has a built-in 4: 3 anamorphic mode.

Let's move to real movie meat . Panasonic S1H probably has the most advanced video mode among full-frame cameras.

The highest possible quality of the material is obtained not for 6K material, but for 4K. Panasonic S1H allows internal recording of 10-bit 4K UHD or DCI video in 4: 2: 2 chrome, with 400 Mbps bitrate and All-I compression. When using the full frame area we have recording up to 30 fps, and in Super35 mode the camera will record 4K video up to 60 fps. The material can be recorded in the built-in V-Log profile, in the H.264 or H.265 codec, in parallel on two SD cards. Anamorphic mode is also available.

When saving 6K (5952 x 3968) we have 4: 2: 0 chrome, 10-bit image, 200 Mbps bitrate and LongGOP compression.

We also have a record in high frame. In full frame mode we only have Full HD resolution at 120 fps. After limiting the size to Super35, we can record in DCI 4K and UHD 4K resolutions in 48 fps.

In terms of audio, the camera allows you to set 31 levels of sensitivity, from –18 db to +12 db. It is also possible to turn off audio recording.

It promises to be a strong video player, although the competition is also strong.

Panasonic S1H has been valued at $ 3,999 This is a high price threshold, considering that the BlackMagic Cinema Camera 6K costs $ 2,500. The advantage of panasonic is the full frame matrix. In contrast, the RMP video recording format is in favor of the BMPCC 6K. The duel will be stiff. And you have to remember that Sony A7S III is already lurking somewhere on the horizon.
