Apple may have a big problem with the iPhone camera. An Israeli company claims that Americans stole their ideas, which - worse - were patented. The case concerns five iPhone models.

The Israeli company Corephotonics has brought a powerful lawsuit against Apple . The case concerns technologies used in iPhones equipped with a dual lens. I am talking about the iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus, X, XS and XS Max models.

The lawsuit concerns the theft of patents describing the cooperation of several lenses. Apple was supposed to steal ideas for a method of quickly switching between lenses, for zoom using both optical and digital zoom and to combine photos from a wide angle and telephoto lens, to improve the quality in the center of the frame. iPhones use a telephoto lens in good lighting, and in low light they use a picture from the basic lens.

Corephotonics is not another bush company that wants to stand out on Apple. The Israelis are behind the biggest innovations in the mobile photography market.

In today's world, the quality of photos from smartphones does not increase drastically with the next generation of equipment. Good photos can be taken even with the Samsung Galaxy S7 from 2016. In an era when there is no revolution, but only a slow evolution, producers are fighting not so much with the quality of the pictures as with the possibilities of the cameras. Hence the idea of ​​multiplying lenses, which gives the user a real incentive to replace the smartphone with a better one. Telezooms and ultra wide-angle lenses bring a great breath of freshness to the mobile photography markets.

Corephotonics is responsible for many such innovations in the mobile world. Israelis have developed a telephoto lens for smartphones, which has been used in many designs. They also created a periscope zoom with a broken optical path, which went to Oppo smartphones. Corephotonics also stands behind the double aperture used in top Samsung S and Note lines.

That's right: Samsung. The whole case is even more interesting if we remember that at the beginning of 2019 this Korean manufacturer became the new owner of Corephotonics. Samsung bought the company for $ 155 million

Apple engineers have benefited from the knowledge provided by Corephotonics. This applies to the lawsuit.

The founder of Corephotonics is David Mendlovic, a professor at the University of Tel Aviv, associated with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Israel. Mendlovic invited the cream of Israeli scientists related to digital imaging to cooperate.

In 2012, Mendlovic met with Graham Townsend, senior president of Apple's imaging department. The gentlemen discussed the potential cooperation of Apple and Corephotonics and new technologies that could go to iPhones. Mendlovic was calm when talking about his company's solutions, because they were protected by patents.

Corephotonics claims that their ideas passed on at meetings with Apple engineers were unlawfully used by Americans. Interestingly, the lawsuit filed by this company is the second, because in 2017 the company also brought Apple to court. The legal battle is still ongoing and it is not known how it will end.

What about future iPhones?

In the upcoming iPhones we will see three main camera lenses. The cheaper version, i.e. the successor of the XR model, will have a double lens. So it may turn out that the lawsuit will be extended by three more iPhone models.

Some commentators claim that Corephotonics is just a patent troll that wants to make money by suing the filthy rich Apple. However, looking at the achievements of this Israeli company, it is difficult to say that it is only about money. I am very curious about the court ruling in this matter.
