Leica ME (Type-240) is a new digital rangefinder from a German manufacturer. It costs a lot, but it is still the cheapest camera of the "M" system.The Leica plan is simple - with this camera they want to attract new and undecided users. Will it work?

Specification from years ago - is it enough?

The manufacturer did not give too much accurate information about the new camera. This may give rise to some surprise or even concern. We know that inside we will find a 24-megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor. The sensor works with the Maestro processor, but it is not known which generation. And if so, it probably is not the latest model, because these Germans would certainly be proud of.

The set offers the possibility of shooting in the ISO 200-6400 range with a maximum speed of 3 fps series. 2 GB of built-in memory is designed to support image buffering. There is also no crazy about filming. Leica ME (Type-240) can only record Full HD materials, which is a very poor standard for our times.

The specification perfectly agrees with the Leica M parameters of 2012, in which I was in love then. It seems to me that the Germans used the old or slightly refreshed components from before the good 7 years on the road of savings. Internet purists graphs and digital grains will probably be a disappointment with this specification. Lovers of good photos will tread the brilliant Leica glasses and will probably be happy with the fantastic plasticity and colors that this sensor offers.

Leica ME (Type 240) is priced at $ 3,995. and is expected to be sold in July 2019. We do not yet know the Polish price, but you can probably expect a sum of around 18-20 thousand. zł. For the average photographer, it's still a lot, but it's worth looking at other models of this brand. And so Leica M10P is an expense of around 30-33 thousand. zł. On the other hand, Leica M (Type 262) is already a little bit more than PLN 25,000. zł. Against them, Leica ME (Type 240) seems to be a "budget" device.

Leica is just slowing 100 employees of the headquarters , which, with a total employment of about 1,600 employees, is a big change. It is also unofficially known that the company changes the sales model, strongly centralizing it and cutting costs. No wonder - the camera market is shrinking from year to year. Leica sees that and wants to go more towards the development of cameras and lenses in smartphones, as well as artificial intelligence and computational photography.

The German product has been cooperating with the Huawei brand for several years. Importantly, German technology in Chinese smartphones is not only hardware, but also software - at least in some essential part. Software, which may also be useful in cameras soon. Besides, investing in software and AI should no longer surprise anyone. The new Leica ME (Type 240) fits well with the new vision of the company. And many photographers open the door to enter the dream system. The camera is really cheap, as for this producer, which can really encourage new users. And those who will enter it will need lenses and accessories that Leica will be happy to sell.
