The LG G8 must rise to the task. Here is everything we know about him before the premiere

Here is the LG G8 , one would like to say. Although the premiere has been over a week, we already know a lot about the upcoming smartphone.

G8 ThinQ will be a product from the 'stand out or die' category for the LG mobile division. The branch responsible for smartphones has been generating losses for a long time (we are talking about more than USD 100 million in the red in each quarter), and last year not only sales revenues, but also the number of units sold went down. And this despite aggressive advertising campaigns.

This is reflected in the prices of devices that make their debut on very high shelves, to instantly fall by several levels:

The above commentary on the text about the premiere of LG V40 in Poland would be even ridiculous if it were not that ... it's just the truth. Last year's LG G7 at the start of sales cost PLN 3,500. Today, we can buy it for less than PLN 1,700. Ouch.

That's why LG G8 has to rise to the task.

And according to what we have just seen, it will certainly fulfill the task from the visual side:

Personally, I am very convinced by the look of the LG G8, even if it has not changed at all with the LG G7. It's a simple, minimalist shape, with thin frames around the screen and ... an indentation that, fortunately, is not there for a reason. 3D cameras are supposed to be hidden, for unlocking the device.

On the one hand, it's a shame, because this solution should be found in last year's LG G7, while the G8 will look like an old product at the start, when you put it next to the Samsung Galaxy S10 .

Personally, however, I do not have the slightest problem with it. Let only the screen be an OLED panel, not an LCD, because it was the display technology that was the biggest constructional problem of last year's G7.

Graphics published by Evan Blass also reveal that LG will not say goodbye to the headphone connector (it is interesting to see if this year the quadruple DAC known from the V series will go to it). There is also a dedicated button to wake up the Google assistant and, as befits the flagship LG, the MIL-STD810G certification.

The triple camera system from the LG V40 did not hit LG G8 - instead, the model of the previous two generations of the product will have two sensors: standard and ultra-wide angle.

From the specification side, we expect 6 GB of RAM and 64/128 GB of data memory. The processor remains unknown, because the experience of previous years ( ekhm, LG G6 , ekhm ) shows that top LG smartphones do not always make their debut with the latest SoC. It is therefore likely to use both the new Snapdragon 855 and last year's 845. I would not really be surprised if LG showed two variants with different processors, including one with 5G technology support.

Where do innovations end and quirks begin?

LG G8 ThinQ at first glance seems to be ordinary pain. And yet the manufacturer is preparing at least two surprises, which he hopes to stand out from the crowd.

The first is an attached module with an additional screen. It is not known if it will be just a bar above the main display (as it used to be in LG V10 / V20), or maybe a case with an additional screen on the entire surface of the back.

The second innovation is handling gestures without touching. Probably just to this, in addition to unlocking the device, will be used 3D cameras on the front. If someone was driving a new BMW, they are familiar with the infotainment system using gestures. Similarly, it has to work on the LG smartphone.

If the first announcement I consider to be a complete quirk and unnecessary return to an idea that has already proved to be a failure (do you remember the modules for the LG G5? ), The gesture handling sounds surprisingly sensible.

How many times do we have wet or dirty hands and we want to use the phone? How many times do we pull the gloves in the cold, because they are too thick for the screen of the phone to recognize the touch? Appropriately implemented gesture technology can prove extremely useful in everyday use.

Is that enough?

I would like to be more optimistic, but ... we already know roughly what Samsung is preparing for us . What Huawei is preparing for us . And against this background reports of the LG G8 ThinQ do not give a positive impression, or at least do not give rise to exaggerated excitement.

Do not get it wrong - the LG G8, like the G7, V30 or V40, will probably be a great smartphone. Only being great is a bit too little, you have to stand out in the crowded market.

And if the LG G8 is to be a product for the company, "stand out or die" ... well. Finish the finale of this story yourself.
