Thanks to DJI updates, the Mavic Mini is a completely different drone today than it was when it was released

DJI just showed a new software update, which reminded me of how great the DJI Mavic Mini is today, the cheapest drone on offer. A lot has changed since the premiere.

The DJI Mavic Mini has been on the market for eight months and continues to surprise. When the equipment went on sale in November last year, it immediately caught the eye of photographers, filmmakers and simply fans of new technologies.

It was the first DJI drone designed by lawyers , which surprised with a weight of only 249 g. This is one gram less than the requirement for registration in the United States and coming in the European Union. Extreme slimming treatment resulted in poorer quality plastics and overall material savings, but the Mavic Mini had every right to the name Mavic, which, after all, obliges.

The drone showed an enormous flight culture. He was responsive and predictable. The drawback was certainly Wi-Fi connectivity providing short range in the city, but outside the city I successfully flew this equipment over a kilometer while maintaining the image preview.

The real cuts were in very limited photo and video modes, but over the months DJI has been very positively surprised.

I have been a Mavik Mini user from the very beginning . The drone, despite many cuts compared to more expensive models, I liked it so much that I got rid of the Mavic Air for the Mini. I don't regret this decision at all. I fly occasionally and only for recreation. In fact, the drone rests on the shelf most of the time, but there are situations when it is very useful to me.

I have sacrificed 4K recording and RAW photos for the compact size and very long flight time on a single link, so I end up using the Mavic Mini more than the Aira. The drone is so small I can take it anywhere, even on a bike.

Right after the premiere, the drone was very limited in terms of photo and video. The hardware layer, i.e. the matrix and the lens, of course, remained unchanged, but in terms of DJI software, it fixed a lot of deficiencies.

At the beginning, the DJI Mavic Mini did not offer any manual mode in the video. Worse still, he didn't even have the option to choose a white balance. This meant that this equipment could only be treated as toys. During the flights, the colors in the film could change depending on the position in relation to the sun, and there were jumps in the brightness of the image. The exposure lock was some help, but it was only a manual mode prosthesis.

Today, eight months and many updates later, the Mavic Mini is finally a drone that takes the user seriously. The first major update introduced the possibility of manual white balance selection, thanks to which the problems with colors ended. The second of the big updates added a manual mode to the video, thanks to which we can already define the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed in the film, which opens the way to the use of gray filters, and thus, much more cinematic results.

Changing the white balance? A bit tucked away on the menu but present.

The application in its current state allows you to display a histogram, grid lines (or, for example, a marker in the center of the screen), or even a burnout indicator. In addition, there were more settings regarding the frame rate. Image in 2.7K resolution can be recorded in 24, 25 or 30 fps, and in 1080p quality in 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 fps.

Histogram and burnout rate? Current.
Manual ISO sensitivity and shutter speed? Present!
More variety of recording modes? Also present!

There is still a lack of 4K resolution in video mode and RAW photo recording when shooting, but the latter can be bypassed by using exposure bracketing and manual joining of frames to HDR. The tonal range of such photos is definitely growing. Unfortunately, there is still no automatic bracketing, because the exposure changes must be forced between frames manually.

As you can see, we still have a gap between more expensive drones, but the Mavic has become a much better device.

In addition, the DJI Fly application itself is getting better. Initially, it was just a poor copy of the DJI Go 4. When the Mavic Mini drone was released, the division was very clear: we operate large and professional drones from the DJI Go level, while the tiny Mini gets a very simplified DJI Fly application.

However, the application has received many improvements. The company's latest drone, the DJI Mavic Air 2, also works under the control of the DJI Fly application, and more and more leaks are heard saying that the same will happen to the upcoming DJI Mavic 3 Pro. it is very possible that the manufacturer is phasing out the current Go application in favor of a simpler but more accessible Fly.

The new battery level indicator is much easier to read.

Even today, the DJI Fly app receives a new version in which we see a refreshed drone battery indicator. Instead of a strip that runs across the entire smartphone screen, we have a round indicator with a percentage value in the middle. After clicking this icon, we can see the exact time left to activate the RTH procedure (return to the starting point), to force the landing and to completely discharge the cell.

DJI Fly also offers new, much more extensive, gimbal settings, but this only applies to the Mavic Air 2 drone. We can adjust the range of motion and reaction speed for each axis separately.

To sum up, for PLN 1,750 you can't buy a better drone than the DJI Mavic Mini. The equipment is much better than at the time of the premiere and today it pays off much more than eight months ago. It's definitely worth giving it a chance, although you have to remember that it is not a professional equipment.
