Android will block alternative camera apps. For our good, of course

Soon, using a camera application other than the default in third-party Android programs will be difficult. Google supposedly cares about our security in this way.

Android 11 won't bring you a staggering amount of changes , but one of them may be quite controversial. After all, Google's mobile operating system is always praised for its openness and giving customers a choice, and this will be limited in its next version.

Third party apps on Android 11 will not be able to access any camera apps other than the default.

Of course, everyone will be able to take photos on a daily basis using this program that suits them and nothing changes in this respect, but Google removes something else - it is about the possibility of sharing freshly taken photos between different applications. Apps in Android 11 will only be able to access this default system camera.

This is a big change, because so far Google's system allowed third-party programs, when they asked the user to take a new photo, and did not have their own camera module, to download such information from any photo application. Now only one camera can be selected from other applications - the default one.

This is to protect your privacy, of course.

Google explains that it was for this purpose that Android 11 made the process of taking photos in applications difficult with another tool. Now, to add to one program a photo taken with another, which adds, for example, cool filters, you will have to run the second one and save the photo to the gallery in it, and then find the photo in the gallery in the first one.

Google is aware of course that such a change will make life a bit more difficult for customers, but it believes it is necessary to protect us from potential data leakage. It seems that the company wants, for example, a camera application of unknown origin not to be used to scan a payment card in the bank's application, prescriptions in a medical application, etc. From now on, programmers will only be able to force the opening of a specific camera application, but without the option choose any.

It's interesting that Google is taking away the option to choose a non-default application in the same year that Apple finally decided to give its customers the ability to choose a default browser and a default email application. Who knows - maybe Apple and Google will meet in the middle of the openness of their mobile platforms in a few years?
