Realme 6 Pro with 90Hz screen as standard for a cheaper smartphone - a review

Screens with a higher refresh rate until recently were identified with these most expensive, flagship smartphone models. Since 2020, 90Hz panels also go to cheaper devices, the best example of which is Realme 6 Pro - a smartphone for PLN 1,500 from the middle shelf.

Realme 6 Pro debuts in a difficult moment. Realme is a new brand on our market that still does not have such a trusted customer base as other Chinese manufacturers. In addition, economic stagnation continues, during which we minimize the number of purchases and reduce expenses. Meanwhile, Realme 6 Pro is a more expensive device than the economical Redmi, Oppo, Poco or Motorola models, costing PLN 1,500. Is this price justified?

The distinguishing feature of the Realme 6 Pro model is the screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz.

Realme advertises its mid-range feature associated with premium smartphones: a display with a high refresh rate. The Chinese manufacturer used the FHD + LCD panel (2400 by 1080 pixels, 399 ppi) displaying up to 90 frames per second. The refresh rate can be reduced in the settings, thus saving the smartphone's battery.

Realme is not the first manufacturer to install a 90 Hz panel into a cheaper low / medium shelf device. He is one of the few who did it right. There are no noticeable performance drops, jams, or sudden and unexpected temperature fluctuations when using the device. The operating system runs smoothly, not counting a few seconds immediately after restarting the smartphone. The same applies to popular web browsers.

Unfortunately, it's not so rosy with games. Practice has shown that many applications recognize Realme 6 Pro as a smartphone too weak to offer graphic settings for 90 or 120 frames per second. This is the case, for example, in PUBG Mobile, where the maximum setting for the refresh rate has been blocked. Even downhill graphics properties to medium or low levels does not help. In addition, some of the less resource-consuming games supporting higher frequencies (for example, Alto's Odyssey) still work in classic mode.

On the web you can read that Realme 6 Pro is a great smartphone for mobile games. I have verified this empirically and I can not fully agree. Sure - a larger capacity battery is an additional advantage when playing 60Hz productions, but in most titles the player will not feel a jump to 90Hz. The gaming properties of this model are exhausted, not counting the system overlay that allows you to take screenshots or record the game along with a comment.

Another drawback of the screen seems to be color reproduction.

Immediately after starting the device, you notice the exaggerated colors - a popular trick designed to render extremely vivid colors, but in practice distorting the source materials. Fortunately, the palette modification slider can be turned off, thus eliminating the strong influence of cold blue on the image. It is only surprising that it is turned on by default, frightening even gaudy brightness.

Characteristically in the case of LCD panels, black leaves a bit to be desired. Despite this, the equipment offers a decent contrast, as well as more than satisfactory brightness. Using your smartphone in daylight is not a problem at all. The size and location of the dual selfie camera may be a problem. At least for some users. Set in the upper left, the concave islet above the cut glass disturbs the homogeneous sheet of Gorilla Glass 5. It also collects dust. I quickly got used to it, but I know that there are users who hate such an asymmetrical solution.

In terms of ergonomics and performance, Realme 6 Pro is a strong four with a plus.

The first thing that catches the eye is the gradient on the back of the device. The color transition is not linear, but takes the shape of lightning, standing out from the competition. The effect changes depending on the angle of view and the degree of inclination of the device being held. Interesting cosmetics. On the other hand, the shiny backs of the device made of plastic are a real magnet for fingerprints and greasy marks.

I really liked the location of the side enable button with the built-in fingerprint reader. The side sensor is extremely convenient to use and fast. Unfortunately, I cannot write the same about the volume control buttons - they are too low, too shallow and can be pressed by accident.

It should be noted that Realme 6 Pro is a relatively heavy smartphone. You can feel the device weighing 202 g in your hand, which depending on individual preferences can be both a disadvantage and an advantage. The advantage is definitely not the shape and finish of the block from the front. Although it is difficult to see in the pictures, the screen does not blend in with the sides in a natural way. You can feel the transition from glass to a relatively sharp material, especially noticeable when making a swipe gesture from left to right. Detail, but it is by such details that you can distinguish great, bearable and poor designs.

In general, the use of Redmi 6 Pro is comfortable and convenient. However, the details are not refined. The screen is heavily cut out against the background of the housing, the quality of physical buttons has been saved, and only one loudspeaker is a defect in 2020 that cannot be missed. It is easy to cover the audio source in landscape mode, especially when playing. On the other hand, we have a great side line reader, surprisingly effective face recognition, unique design and solid workmanship. It could have been better, it could have been much worse.

Performance and software, i.e. the fight against rubbish.

Realme 6 Pro works on modified Android 10, which originated from Color OS. Chinese roots are strongly visible after the first start of the device, in the form of numerous pre-installed applications. I counted 17 additional, niche programs pressed by Realme, including a proprietary protection scanner and two Oppo digital distribution platforms. Shocker.

The heart of Realme 6 Pro is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor (2x2.3 GHz Kryo 465 Gold and 6x1.8 GHz Kryo 465 Silver) with the Adreno 618 graphics chip. The CPU created for mid-range smartphones is perfect for everyday smartphone use. The device also handles the most demanding video games. Realme 6 Pro maintains very smooth gameplay even in the most visually advanced titles like Fortnitte, PUBG Mobile or Vainglory. I am simply surprised how dynamic experience this equipment offers.

Realme 6 Pro does not catch shortness of breath also in blocked 90 Hz mode. However, keep in mind that, as I mentioned earlier, most mobile games do not spread wings on this equipment, still operating at 30 or 60 frames per second. Perhaps it is a matter of the fact that some game developers have adjusted the higher frame to 120Hz screens. From this point of view, it is difficult to advertise Realme 6 Pro as a device for demanding players. For this multimedia browsing or system navigation is smooth and trouble-free.

The tested smartphone works about 35 hours on one charge, with 90Hz refresh mode enabled. This is possible thanks to the relatively large 4300mAh battery. The included charger will charge your equipment up to 50 percent. in half an hour, using the 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 standard.

The main camera is good, but the selfie camera is a star.

Portrait mode

Wide front angle

One of the biggest differences between the Realme 6 and Realme 6 Pro models is the selfie camera. The front camera is equipped with an additional wide-angle lens. With it, portrait photos allow you to capture more objects. Great solution, especially when we take a selfie of several people. No more trimmed heads. The front wide-angle lens is very practical, especially during social gatherings and trips.

It's easy to see that portrait photos are too bright. The effect is difficult to combat even with alternative filters in the camera application. Other front camera photo modes include a close-up portrait, default photo, night photo, panorama, video, time-lapse movie and slow motion. Added to this is digital background blur adjustment and beneficial AI modifiers (set to 30% by default) responsible for skin smoothing, slimming face and eye enlargement.

The main camera uses a system of four lenses: main 64MP f / 1.8, wide-angle 8MP f / 2.3, tele 12MP f / 2.5 and macro 2MP f / 2.4. The camera takes 16MP photos by default, but the application allows you to use the main Samsung lens to create 64MP photos. By default, the main camera modes are classic photo, 64MP photo, night photo, portrait, video, time-lapse movie, slow motion, panorama, ultra macro and expert. In the latter, we can choose the RAW format, freely switch between lenses and decide on the values: ISO (100 - 6400), exposure time (S, 1 / 8000s - 2s), white balance (WB, 2000K - 8000K), autofocus (AF ) and exposure (EV, -2 - +2).

Zoom x5

Night shots are definitely the biggest advantage of the main camera. Very readable, clear, with good exposure and low noise. During photos taken during the day, the camera strongly affects the recorded image by making a sharp focus. They gain details. However, I advise against ticking pics in 64MP mode. In clear weather for the detail we get in the bonus a significant portion of noise, which is effectively eliminated when going down to the default value of 16MP. Unfortunately, using a wide-angle lens we lose a lot of details and it is the wide frames that seem to be the weakest element of the camera in question.

Realme 6 Pro works best when taking selfies, magnifications, in low light and for photos of objects at close and medium distances. Outdoor shots and wide frames are worse. We are dealing with a smartphone that will work great for everyday use, but I would like to bring another model with me on an exotic vacation. In general, cameras take good, and sometimes even very good pictures for this price range. Sunday photographers like me and you don't need anything else. I also enjoy slimming and simplifying the dedicated photo application from Oppo.

Light price hill and no NFC.

The biggest disadvantage of the tested Realme is the lack of support for NFC technology. The smartphone does not allow contactless payments, which is a huge disappointment. NFC is a standard that really increases comfort and convenience during everyday activities. In my opinion, this element of the device is much more practical than a screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz.

My second biggest problem with this phone is the price. Established at PLN 1,500, it makes Realme 6 Pro more expensive than efficient, reliable and the most sufficient budgeters than Redmi, Oppo or Motorola. At a price of up to PLN 1,000, we can get an equally good and in some respects an even better smartphone. Redmi explains the price hill with a 90 Hz screen, but I repeat - I would rather welcome the NFC standard instead or reduce the price by a few hundred.

Redmi 6 Pro is a very solid representative of the lower middle shelf. Takes surprisingly good photos, is great for selfies, has a solid battery and interesting design. Unfortunately, cheaper devices can do little or less the same thing. The quality of the device is not a problem here. It is the price, a bit too high with such a large and so strong competition.
