A jump to the premium class. OnePlus 8 Pro - first impressions

OnePlus 8 Pro has finally arrived at our modest thresholds. It's time to take him out of the box and look at him closely.

Thanks to the kindness of the x-kom.pl store , which is the official distributor of OnePlus smartphones in Poland, a courier knocked on my door today with a package containing OnePlus 8 Pro.

I quickly got to the package (maintaining a proper sanitary regime) and here's what I found in it.

OnePlus 8 Pro - "rich" packaging.

Information on packaging minimization did not reach OnePlus. The box in which OnePlus 8 Pro reaches customers is large (book for scale).

There is a lot of good in almost twice the size of the standard packaging. Of course the telephone is the most exposed.

Under it you will find a cardboard box containing the necessary paperwork, a pin to pull out the SIM card tray and ... stickers. I don't know what to think about them, but for my taste they are a bit too ... frivolous.

Below we have only useful things. A silicone case (of average quality but better than none) and a gigantic 30W Warp Charge 3.0 charger and a red and white cable.

Right out of the box, you feel that we are dealing with a premium product. The phone is properly "thick" and solid, with a weight of 198 g you can definitely feel it in your hand.

Unfortunately, it is also terribly slippery. In conjunction with both-sided curved edges and a huge size, I can now confidently give OnePlus 8 Pro the laurel of the most vulnerable smartphone 2020. In addition, the island with cameras protrudes from the case for a good 2 mm and although the phone does not swing sideways when it lies on countertop, it never lies flat.

Maybe it's just an impression, but the Onyx Black housing collects dust and streaks even easier than other glass-aluminum devices. For this smartphone, due to streaks and its slipperiness, it is necessary to buy a case. Fortunately, OnePlus does not disappoint in this matter and provides a range of accessories for each model.

I have to say directly that I'm a bit disappointed with the design of OnePlus 8 Pro. Despite the fact that the indentation on the screen is tiny, it nevertheless interferes with general immersion. Against the background of the frameless, no-breath OnePlus 7T Pro is a regression.

However, the quality of the panel itself is progress. And so what! The OnePlus 8 Pro display is in no way inferior to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. There is a smaller cap (6.78 "), but it also has a resolution of 1440p and a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

Unlike Samsung, in OnePlus we can use 120 Hz and the highest screen resolution "straight out of the box". Of course, at the expense of working time on one charge.

Speaking of progress, from the first contact with the device you can feel progress in one small, but important aspect. Well, the vibrations in OnePlus 8 Pro are excellent. The new mechanism responsible for screen haptics makes a phenomenal impression when typing on a virtual keyboard or receiving notifications.

Stereo speakers are also very good, although I can not say that they are better than the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

I am very interested in the camera. The quadruple optical system (48 + 48 + 8 + 5 Mpix) has enormous potential, but with its evaluation I have to refrain until my copy receives an update improving image processing.

Technological journalists from overseas report that after installing the patch, the OnePlusa 8 Pro camera produces much better results, and the operation of the camera application itself is improved, which for the time being "crunches" when switching between lenses.

I will not write about the smoothness and operation of the interface - OnePlus 8 Pro is devilishly fast and perfectly fluid (not counting the mentioned problem with the camera). The combination of 120 Hz screen and powerful components (Snapdragon 865, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB memory) does its job. Even the Galaxy S20 Ultra is not as responsive in normal use.

The key question is - is OnePlus 8 Pro worth the money?

Until now, it was easy to recommend the top OnePlus smartphone. After all, previous models offered the best of the best components at a price at least half the price of Samsung or iPhone from this world.

This time, however, it is not cheap. The cheapest OnePlus 8 Pro, with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB data space, costs PLN 4,199 . And this is the territory of the iPhone 11 and Samsung Galaxy S20. If OnePlus wants to play in the same sandbox as the big boys, he must prove that he deserves it.

Recently, when trying to break into the premium class, Xiaomi Mi 10 sternly moved . I have a few weeks ahead of me to see how it will be with OnePlus 8 Pro. We start testing!
