A sensational Apple TV service until recently was available on a very narrow set of devices. Today, however, it can be found in many places, including LG TVs. I checked how it works. And I have only one question.

Apple TV is a dual service. First of all, as part of the PLN 25 monthly fee, we gain access to several films and series not available in any other service. In my subjective opinion, this is not a very attractive offer, although some titles are worth checking out. The second function is much more important to me.

And it is once available under the iTunes brand movie rental and store. In my opinion, this is the best service of its kind on the market. Cinema news are fastest appearing on Apple TV, at very reasonable purchase or rental prices, and always in sensational quality. For the Apple TV service, it was worth buying a hardware TV set with the same name.

Apple, however, finally decided to free Apple TV from its equipment. Last year, Samsung offered the Tizen app under an exclusive agreement. This, however, has expired, and Apple's rental and VoD appears on more equipment. Including LG TVs supporting AirPlay 2 and Homekit.

I checked how Apple TV works on the webOS system that manages LG TVs.

The Apple TV client application is of course free and available in the LG Content Store repository, just like all other webOS applications. Installation of the application is trivial, as is its configuration.

At the first launch, it will only ask us if Apple can collect anonymized data about how the app is used. In addition, when you try to buy or rent a movie, it will ask you to log in to our Apple ID (or create one if you don't already have one).

The appearance of the application does not differ from what Apple TV users already know. The interface is very aesthetic and pleasing to the eye, and at the same time easy to use. It is divided into four tabs: Watch now, Movies, Library, search engine and settings (in which, in principle, we can only enable or disable the collection of telemetry data). The application is also very responsive and smooth - at least on LG OLED TV B9 on which it was tested.

I also like the extensive subpage about each movie. Many elements are links that allow us to find a different position than the one currently viewed. For example, in the movie Joker (see above), among others, Robert De Niro. By clicking on the actor's name (see below) the application will immediately show us all the movies with this actor that we can borrow or buy

What is particularly captivating is the quality of the offer and video streams.

In principle, every movie or program is offered in the highest quality in which it was recorded. If there is an official 4K version, this is the one we can find on Apple TV. Similarly with HDR10 or Dolby Vision (though, which seems to be a small loss, the HDR10 + format is missing, which is not supported by LG TVs). Similarly with sound, up to and including Dolby Atmos quality. The flow rate is also very high. This is definitely not UHD Blu-ray quality, but surprisingly little is missing.

This is nice because it's quite unique compared to the leading VOD service providers. Netflix most often offers Ultra HD formats only for Netflix Originals, movies from other labels usually only offer in HD format. At Apple it is always in the highest quality and you never have to pay extra for it. Of course, the most expensive are new products that are just finishing their presence in theaters. Buying a movie for yourself costs PLN 55, and renting costs PLN 15 (we have 30 days to watch, 48 hours after clicking the play button). Older movies are often at significantly lower prices.

Disadvantages, disadvantages, disadvantages ... lack? I admit that I'm not sure why I need additional equipment for this.

I mean, I know. A television is equipment that is rarely replaced. The Apple TV will upgrade the older receiver with VoD services, not just Apple TV with TV + and iTunes rental. However, the Apple TV application is available for last year's and this year's LG TVs (OLED TV and NanoCell) - if we have done so, the motivation to buy equipment basically drops to zero.

As far as new LG and Samsung TVs already support Apple TV and AirPlay 2. The tested LG additionally supports HomeKit. Not only Korean manufacturers are implementing features so far only available on Apple devices for their TVs, but LG currently has the most complete offer for users of the so-called Apple ecosystem . And LG webOS is an eye-catching, lively and convenient operating system.

I will venture to say that in some respects the new LG TV has even more to offer than Apple TV hardware. The Apple tvOS operating system still lacks several VOD applications from popular Polish broadcasters who are present on webOS. However, this is my supposition and subjective assessment. Objectively, I can confirm something else: Apple TV is a sensational movie rental and store (and such subscription service). And on LG TVs it works in an exemplary way.
