Samsung Galaxy Z Flip - first impressions
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was the star of yesterday's Samsung event. I spent a few moments with him during the premiere in London, and here are my first impressions.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was officially presented yesterday, and I had the opportunity to look at it closely in London. At the premiere show of time there was not much, and the devices themselves were extremely few, which is why each invited person had about half an hour exclusively with a smartphone.
This is definitely not enough to bite into the nuances of design and software, but enough to get your first opinion on the Galaxy Z Flip. I invite you to review the most important and interesting features of this smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is compact when folded. And cute.
The folded smartphone is tiny and looks a bit like a powder compact. I couldn't help feeling that it was a very feminine design.
When unfolded, the whole looks like a standard smartphone. With a long screen.
There are thin frames, there is a fashionable opening for the front camera, there are rounded corners of the Dynamic AMOLED panel with a 21: 9 aspect ratio, 6.7 "diagonal and a resolution of 2636 x 1080 pixels. At first glance, the whole thing looks like a regular smartphone.
The slenderness of the structure when unfolded is impressive.
The unfolded Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is thinner than a standard smartphone, which makes a great impression on a large screen. Thanks to this, after folding the whole thing is not thick - it is noticeably thinner than the Galaxy Fold - and yet it managed to fit two batteries with a total capacity of 3300 mAh.
When viewed straight ahead, it looks like a sheet of glass.
You cannot see any combination of two elements of the structure.
It gets worse when the light reflects off the screen.
Reflectors dancing on the screen reveal the presence of a bend in the center of the screen. It is smaller than in Galaxy Folda, but remains visible.
The screen makes a good impression under your finger.
Everything feels like glass and seems much harder than in Galaxy Folda, but nobody attempted to scratch the screen with a coin or keys. Importantly, the screen fully adheres to the housing in every position, so it is not raised, as in Motorola Razr.
After folding, the Galaxy Z Flip is flat. Almost.
The structure after folding has a small slack thickness of several sheets of paper.
Hinge? We know him from somewhere.
The hinge is very similar to that of the Galaxy Fold, both from the outside and from the inside.
Closing the cover ends the phone call.
Something beautiful. In turn, opening the housing can automatically answer the call.
The smartphone can be placed in the "micro-laptop" position.
Thanks to this, we can take a selfie by placing the smartphone on any flat surface, without the need for a tripod.
Some tried to use it for writing.
I do not recommend.
The outer screen is colorful and really tiny.
The Super AMOLED on the outside of the housing has a diagonal of only 1.1 inches and a resolution of 300 × 112 pixels. It displays the time, information about notifications, and if necessary you can reject the call on it.
The screen can also be used to view a selfie taken with the main camera.
We then see a thumbnail of the face, but framing is possible. In this way we get a better, external camera. And even two: standard and ultra-wide angle of 12 megapixels. The internal selfie camera has 10 MP and a darker lens.
Some applications look completely different on Galaxy Z Flip than on other smartphones.
Samsung promotes a solution in which the application is divided into two parts if the Galaxy Z Flip is set in a "laptop" position. This is how the Camera works, which displays a preview at the top and the elements to operate at the bottom. YouTube works similarly, where we can see the video on the whole upper part and comments at the bottom. Samsung provides an API, so any developer can adapt their application to the new mode of operation of Galaxy Z Flip. If the application does not support this news, it is displayed in the standard way.
There is a fingerprint reader on one edge, and a SIM socket on the other.
Yes, we have support for physical SIM cards here, so Galaxy Z Flip has a better chance of being accepted than Motorola Razr that supports only e-sim.
Why is this smartphone called Galaxy Z Flip and not V Flip?
Price? PLN 6600
On the one hand, cosmically a lot, on the other, much less than Motorola Razr, and Samsung is better in virtually every category. It has a better screen, better components (Snapdragon 855+ processor, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB) and better cameras.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip does not play a note of nostalgia like Motorola. It is a modern, minimalist, well-made construction. Only or needed? Personally, I would choose a traditional design, but there are many voices that folded smartphones are the future of the industry.
