Touch ID may return in a new version. iPhones can have fingerprint readers all over the screen

Apple has not used fingerprint readers in iPhones for three years, but Touch ID may return. Apple is working on a reader that works across the entire screen.

A fast and secure biometrics system is an indispensable element of the AD 2020 smartphone. Scanning fingerprints, the whole face or the iris of the eye works better for some manufacturers, worse for others, but everyone is extremely important. After all, a smartphone is not only a telephone and an internet device, but also a store, bank, payment terminal, locator, and in a way even a health card. Effective device lock is more important than ever today, because the smartphone has never had more sensitive information about the owner before.

Therefore, any changes in how to unlock the smartphone attract the attention of the media and users. Three years ago, Apple focused on unlocking the iPhone using only a face scan. The complicated Face ID system already present in three generations of iPhones (as well as in iPad Pro) consists of an infrared dot projector and a camera reading the distribution of the micro pattern from the face.

Face ID

Face ID has not been broken to this day, apart from absurd, purely academic attempts to bypass the system, e.g. by 3D printing of the face scan. In practice, you can not create such a print without the knowledge of the iPhone owner, because you need a three-dimensional scan of his head.

Thus, Face ID is a much more perfect, faster and more transparent system than the previously used Touch ID, i.e. fingerprint.

And yet Apple is developing new Touch ID technologies. The system may return in a new release.

Although the new iPhones only have Face ID, the older Touch ID is still alive and is present in new Apple products. The fingerprint scanner can be found in MacBooks and even the latest iPads (apart from the Pro series). Touch ID is also in the latest iPhone currently sold with thick frames, i.e. in model 8. It is also said that Touch ID will go to the upcoming, cheap iPhone 9.

However, it seems that Apple is seriously thinking about the return of Touch ID also to the higher series of iPhones. From time to time, rumors return that new iPhones would be equipped with face and fingerprint unlocking at the same time, but I didn't believe these reports.

This time, however, we have the first particular: patent number 10541280 obtained just by Apple. The patent application describes an OLED screen with a built-in fingerprint reader operating on the entire surface of the display.

apple touch id patent

In the patent application we can see an example of using such a screen in a "mobile phone, media player and personal computer". The graphics are kept in a very laconic style, but the specification of the computer gives a lot to think about. Perhaps Apple is paving the way for MacBooks with OLED touch screens and fingerprint readers in this way.

The scanner is to work on the entire screen.

qualcomm fingerprint reader

This is the biggest novelty described in the application. And in the scale of the entire market, not just Apple. The competition has long used readers embedded in the screen, but each time only a small part of the display responds to touch. Qualcomm is working on increasing the surface of the readers , but has not yet reported about readers operating on the entire screen. As a result, sometimes it is difficult to hit the right place with your finger, which can be very annoying when we want to use the smartphone quickly. If the entire surface were active, such problems would disappear completely.

We still do not know if Apple intends to sell devices with the new generation of Touch ID. All the time it's hard for me to believe it, considering the success of the Face ID system, which is being developed with every new generation of iPhone. The newer solution is simply more convenient because the identification takes place in the background, without the user's involvement. You don't have to point your finger at anything, just look at the screen. In addition, Apple practically never returns to the technology it has already given up.

All this makes it hard for me to believe in the return of Touch ID, but in the case of Apple, you can not be sure of anything.
