Samsung showed a matrix with a resolution of 108 megapixels. Soon it will go to smartphones

108 megapixels on your smartphone! It sounds like crazy, but such devices are already heading to the market. Samsung has just shown the first matrix with such high resolution.

Samsung has partnered with Xiaomi, which results in a new ISOCELL Bright HMX matrix. Remember this name because it will be loud. The sensor designed for smartphones has a resolution of up to 108 megapixels, which is an absolute record in mobile photography.

108 megapixels on your smartphone. How it's working?

The Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX matrix, apart from its enormous resolution, is also distinguished by its powerful physical size in the smartphone segment. The sensor has a diagonal of 1 / 1.33 inches, which allows you to maintain a pixel size of 0.8 micrometer. This is a very reasonable level.

It must be clearly said that such matrix size in today's smartphones is a real sensation. On Twitter you can find a comparison of the matrixes of the upcoming Huaweia Mate 30 Pro with the matrixes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 . The latest sensor with a resolution of 108 megapixels will be even larger than the sensors from Huaweia.

The matrix will work in Tetracell technology, which is probably the equivalent of the Quadbayer technology used in Sony matrices. This means that the pixels are grouped into 2 x 2 pixel blocks and only such a block gets information about the color.

All this means that the matrix by default creates photos with a resolution of 27 megapixels, or 1/4 of the maximum resolution. Photographs in such a reduced size are characterized by improved quality, and in addition Samsung boasts a Smart-ISO mechanism, which is supposed to intelligently choose the level of noise reduction in night photos. Following the example of other high resolution matrices, it will be possible to force the operating mode to be fully 108 megapixels.

The new matrix is also a treat for fans of video quality, because the sensor will handle the 6K recording.

samsung 108 megapixels

The new Samsung matrix allows recording video in 6K resolution, i.e. 6016 x 3384 pixels, at a rate of 30 fps. What's more, in this mode there is no limit to the angle of view of the matrix, because the sensor records its entire surface.

This does not mean, however, that we will immediately see smartphones recording in 6K. The matrix will not be a problem, but it may be different with the processor and software, which will have to live, at a rate of 30 fps, scale the image from 108 to 20 megapixels. 6K is the area corresponding to just 20 megapixels. In the professional camera segment, such scaling is a very big challenge, so you can think that in the mobile segment we will also wait for it for an even longer time.

This is the beginning of a new megapixel war.

The mobile market is taking a strange course when it comes to photography. After several years of stagnation in terms of resolution, manufacturers began to use sensors with resolutions of 48 megapixels (Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus) and 40 megapixels (Huawei).

Recently, the first photos from the Realme matrix with (temporarily) a record resolution of 64 megapixels appeared. Clippings increased to 100 percent show that the camera's optics cannot cope with such resolution at all, but it must be honestly admitted that the photo displayed on the monitor or TV in 4K resolution looks surprisingly good. I suspect that the Samsung matrix will behave in the same way.

It is also worth noting that Samsung is throwing a glove to Sony.

Sony is the leader in the matrix market and produces sensors for most smartphones. The Japanese produce matrixes for all (I emphasize: all) smartphones in the TOP 10 DxO Mobile ranking .

Samsung clearly wants to cut most of this cake. It's a lucrative business, especially at a time when smartphones have three or more lenses. Behind each is a matrix that can be sold to another manufacturer. Sony's financial reports show that selling good matrices simply pays off. In the last quarter, Sony's sensor sales increased by 70 percent. year on year, reaching EUR 420 million. So there is something to fight for.
