Asus Zenfone 6 is the better Xiaomi Mi 9

A smartphone equipped with top components does not have to cost a fortune. It shows us not only Xiaomi, but also Asus. His latest model, Zenfone 6, is equipment for fans of top performance at a very affordable price.

What else can you say about a smartphone that costs PLN 2199 and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6 GB RAM and 64 GB internal memory? People who need even more power will be able to buy more powerful variants of the device equipped with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal memory or 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal memory. Their prices will be 2399 PLN and 2599 PLN respectively.

Some people may notice that the Xiaomi Mi 9 offers a similar specification for 1899 PLN is true. Unfortunately, this model has been equipped with a small battery with a capacity of 3300 mAh. For a change, Asus engineers decided to use cells with a capacity of 5000 mAh, which are easily enough for more than one or even two whole days of work. The smartphone also supports fast charging (18 W), but does not support inductive charging.

A nice surprise is the fact that the use of large cells did not translate into an increase in the thickness of the device. Asus has vast experience in creating motherboards, so this element of the smartphone was designed to take up less space, but it consisted of two layers. Zenfone 6 is a well-thought-out model at the level of workmanship. His shape is quite conservative, but pretty, and all the elements are well folded. The housing is largely made of Corning Gorilla Glass 6, so the strength of your smartphone should also be high.

The appearance of the smartphone only spoils the small fingerprint reader on the back of the device. However, it is worth remembering that it is much more convenient than the solutions of the competition mounted under the screen, so even this minor design flaw I judge in plus. Another very useful addition is a headphone output that is missing from many competing devices. There was also Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and multi-range location.

Price and performance is not everything.

We already see that Asus Zenfone 6 is characterized by a great price-performance ratio. However, this is not a perfect smartphone. First of all, Asus did not decide to use the AMOLED screen, only IPS. This 6.4-inch display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels is characterized by excellent color reproduction and high brightness (600 nit), but in full sunlight its visibility falls out worse than AMOLEDs.

In addition, it is worth noting that the screen supports HDR10 and features a full coverage of the DCI-P3 color space, making it great for watching movies. However, movies are not only a picture, but also sound, so Zenfone 6 has two very good stereo speakers and supports surround sound on almost any headphones.

It is also worth noting that the screen has very thin side and top frames and a visible chin, which is the effect of using a rigid IPS screen instead of a flexible OLED. The most important, however, is that the display has no indentation. This was achieved because Asus decided to give up the front camera for the rotating rear camera, which also functions as a selfie camera.

We're dealing here with the Sony IMX586 sensor with a resolution of 48 megapixels, known from the Xiaomi Mi 9, which is complemented by a wide-angle camera with a resolution of 13 megapixels and a viewing angle of 125 degrees. The brightness of the main lens f / 1.75, and the brightness of the wide camera is not known. The quality of photos offered by Zenfone 6 is quite good, but it is still to be improved by 25/05/2019. Then the smartphone will go to stores, and customers will receive a powerful software update. It is also worth mentioning in a few words about the software, which for a long time was the Achilles' heel of Asus smartphones. A year ago, fortunately it changed and from then Zenfones work under the control of a very slim ZenUI overlay. Its latest, sixth version based on the Android 9.0 Pie turns out to be simple and very convenient to use. It is characterized by the lack of unnecessary applications, a transparent interface and great tools for energy management.

There was also a Google Assistant, which can be run not only by voice, but also using a dedicated button on the housing. If someone did not use the Assistant, he would be able to assign it to any other function.

Asus Zenfone 6 is a very promising smartphone. Is it worth buying?

I am not afraid to say that this is a great price / performance ratio. We have a technical specification from the top shelf, very good workmanship, a huge battery and a pretty good screen. It is also intrigued by the rotating camera, which thanks to its non-standard construction helps a lot in making panoramic photos and improves the object tracking function. And all this for PLN 2199!

Due to the price and the aforementioned camera, this model reminds me of Oppo Reno and many people may wonder which of these devices to choose. The offer from Oppo is nicer, has a better AMOLED screen and very fast SuperVOOC charging. Asus Zenfone 6 is much faster, has a much larger battery and a better camera for selfies. At least in terms of hardware, because with its final evaluation we have to wait a few more days.

It's also worth to compare the Asus Zenfone 6 with Xiaomi Mi 9, which is often a model of profitability. So far, I think that the better of these two models is Asus, mainly through a huge battery, the presence of a headphone output and a rotating camera. The only question is whether Zenfone 6 matched Me 9 in terms of the quality of the pictures taken. If so, it will definitely be a better and more profitable proposition from the Xiaomi model and will enjoy great popularity.
