Apple Watch LTE in Poland - everything you need to know

You can make calls, listen to music, send SMSes and e-mails, you can pay and use it to navigate to your destination. No, it's not about another smartphone, but about the Apple Watch LTE, which has recently been available in Poland. And which has recently made sense in Poland. What else is worth knowing about him?

A watch with the most important functions of a smartphone. A watch that is able to replace your smartphone. For many people - including for me, about which in a moment - such a solution can be a dream come true. However, before we go to the store to buy an Apple Watch LTE, it's worth knowing a few things about it.

Apple Watch LTE - how to distinguish it from ordinary Apple Watch GPS?

In addition to the inscription on the packaging and the fact that it works without a connected telephone - a red band on the crown. In addition, both versions are almost indistinguishable.

Apple Watch LTE in Poland - how much does it cost?

There are a total of two generations of Apple Watch available in the free sale, which support LTE - Series 3 and Series 4. For Series 3 you have to pay:

  • PLN 1799 for a version with an envelope of 38 mm
  • PLN 1949 for a version with an envelope of 42 mm

At exactly the same prices, the Nike + variant is also sold, also available in the LTE variant.

If, on the other hand, we plan to buy a new model (worth it!), You will have to pay a little extra. Apple Watch Series 4 LTE is the cost:

  • PLN 2349 for a variant with an 40 mm aluminum envelope
  • PLN 2499 for a variant with an 44 mm aluminum envelope
  • PLN 3199 for a variant with a 40 mm stainless steel case
  • PLN 3449 for a variant with a 44 mm stainless steel case

The surcharge in relation to the GPS version is therefore about 400 PLN for varieties with an aluminum envelope. Apple Watcha with a stainless steel envelope can not be bought in Poland without LTE communications.

Is it possible to buy something cheaper - or Apple Watch LTE from Polish operators.

Is cheaper - everyone has to count. The most important, however, is that Apple Watcha LTE can be bought in Poland in subscription offers - both for private customers and those dedicated to companies. There is only one catch.

The catch is that in Poland only one operator offers the right service. And it is Orange.

So if we want to take advantage of the full capabilities of Apple Watch LTE in our country, we have to decide on the orange network and the appropriate tariff. The other operators admittedly more or less directly announce the introduction of similar services, but so far only Orange has a comprehensive offer.

Orange also offers almost all variants of Apple Watch LTE. The choice is Series 3, in both sizes, as well as Series 4, also in two variants. However, there were no more expensive, steel versions.

How much will we pay for Apple Watch in Orange? In the case of subscription tariffs for individual customers, the situation is as follows:

  • Apple Watch Series 3 38 mm Cellular - 24 installments of PLN 64, PLN 149 of the registration fee, plus a selected subscription
  • Apple Watch Series 3 42 mm Cellular - 24 installments of 69 PLN, 199 PLN of the start fee, plus a selected subscription
  • Apple Watch Series 4 40 mm Cellular - 24 installments of 83 zlotys, 249 zlotys of a starter fee, plus a selected subscription
  • Apple Watch Series 4 44 mm Cellular - 24 installments at 87.99 PLN, 299 PLN start fee, plus a selected subscription

These prices refer to the Mobile Plan 55. Depending on the plan chosen, the starting fee may change. For example, for the most expensive of watches in the Mobile Plan, the start fee is PLN 149, while in the Mobile Plan 45 - PLN 399. In the 35 Mobile Plan you have to pay the full amount immediately for the watch.

The offer also includes Apple Watche Series 3 without mobile communication, but they are not interested in us at the moment.

Business customers have the same devices to choose from. However, there is a significant difference in the amount of the subscription, as well as the starting fee:

  • Apple Watch Series 3 38 mm Cellular - PLN 0 for start, total monthly fee with a subscription from PLN 100 net
  • Apple Watch Series 3 42 mm Cellular - PLN 0 for a start, total monthly subscription fee from PLN 105 net
  • Apple Watch Series 4 40 mm Cellular - PLN 0 for a start, total monthly subscription fee from PLN 119 net
  • Apple Watch Series 4 44 mm Cellular - PLN 0 for a start, total monthly subscription fee from PLN 124 net

Do you need to have an additional service to use the Apple Watch LTE? And how much does it cost?

Yes. It is called the Extra eSIM card and its activation is absolutely necessary to make sense of having an Apple Watch LTE in Poland.

It can be used by individual customers who have a tariff plan:

  • Mobile Plan,
  • Smart LTE Plan Main, LTE Smart Plan,
  • Cell Plan,
  • in Orange Love offers - Internet / TV service / Home phone / Mobile phone,
  • Orange Love -Internet / Telefon komórkowy, Orange Love - Internet 4G / TV service / Mobile phone,
  • Orange Love - Internet 4G / Cell Phone, Basic Internet Mobile, Mobile Internet Optimal;

And also business customers who have purchased one of these tariffs:

  • For companies,
  • Orange Biz Krajowy, Orange Biz Europejski, Orange Biz Basic, Orange Biz VIP,
  • LTE Internet for Office Companies,
  • Internet for companies,
  • Mobile Internet for Business,
  • LTE Internet for large companies,
  • LTE Internet for Business Basic,
  • LTE Internet for Business Advanced,
  • LTE Internet for Business Standard,
  • LTE Internet for Business at Start,
  • LTE Internet for Companies. Maximum.

The service is free for the first 6 months after activation and the launch itself is free. After the promotion, it costs 9 PLN gross per month, and the activation will pay 5 PLN gross.

SIM card in the watch - how does it work at all?

Of course, after activating the service, we do not receive a physical, additional card that can be placed in the watch. Instead, a virtual, additional eSIM card is generated and assigned to our device.

What are the advantages of this solution? One of them is the fact that the device does not need an additional slot for a physical SIM card. As a result, it can be smaller, lighter, and there are fewer components that can be damaged during operation.

The second one is the enormous comfort of using in many situations that could have caused a problem so far. For example, after ordering a service, you do not have to wait a few days for the courier who will provide us with a physical copy of the card. A few clicks in the application and already - we can use the purchased services without the slightest problem.

The advantages of eSIM can be appreciated not only by the owners of Apple Watch LTE, but also, for example, users of the latest iPhones, which eSIM was implemented earlier. Imagine a situation when we buy a phone in a store, but we do not have any SIM card or tariff yet. Until now, we had to go to the store or operator's lounge, select the appropriate card, register it, activate it, select a tariff plan, break it from the packaging and mount it on the phone. Recently, however, the entire process has been significantly simplified - in Orange Flex it is possible to go through the entire procedure directly from the application level. We download it (eg via WiFi), we register (just a photo of proof and selfie), we choose a tariff plan and after a while we can use the phone as part of the operator's network.

And nobody has any doubt that this is the future of SIM cards . No physical pieces of plastic, no trips to operator's salons. Everything on the phone, everything in the application.

PS. If someone does not have Apple Watch, and wants to see how eSIM works (and has the right phone at the same time), the service can now be activated in a large part of Orange's tariff plans. How to do it? I am already explaining the example of my private issue in Orange Flex. You just have to remember that the eSIM card in the phone is not the same as the Ekstra eSIM card service - these are two different services based on eSIM technology.

We run the Orange Flex application - we do not need anything else, here everything is done in this way.

Click on our profile (icon in the upper right corner) and select the SIM card position, then the Main Card and Replace.

Of course, we want an eSIM card, so we choose the right option:

We confirm our intention:

Charge? Orange Flex PLN 0.

And that's it - we are waiting for the activation and completion of the configuration in the system settings. We do not need a physical SIM card anymore.

What tariff plan do I use on Apple Watch after activation?

Exactly the same that you used before. When using the Apple Watch LTE, we use minutes, SMSes and data from our main pool.

Will Apple Watch LTE be roaming?

No, or at least its functions related to communication via the mobile operator's network will not work. So if we go on holiday and leave the phone in a hotel room, then on our return we can count on a few missed calls that we will not see on the watch during the walk.

And what about Orange Flex?

Until now , we can not activate the Extra eSIM card services in Orange Flex . However, it can be expected that this situation will change in the future. In the end, not so long ago the service was available only to individual customers, and now also business clients can use it.

It is definitely worth waiting for good things. And as a customer of Orange Flex, and probably the owner of the Apple Watch LTE soon, I will be happy to wait a while. The more so that Flex works so well for me and I am in no hurry to change the tariff.

What does the configuration look like?

Banally straight. All you need is an Apple Watch LTE, an iPhone and a My Orange account. Next:

We launch the Watch app on your phone:

We choose the watch that we want to connect to the network (if we have more than two).

From the list of options on the main screen, select the Mobile network item.

Then configure the cellular network:

If we configure our watch for the first time, the cellular network setting will be part of the startup process. You do not have to wander around the menu.

After selecting the configuration, we are transferred to the Orange website. Here, we log in to our My Orange account:

We need to activate the Extra eSIM card service.

Select the device name for which the virtual eSIM card will be created ...

... and now, ready. It only remains to wait a moment for activation of the service on the Orange side.

In this tab, after configuration, we will also find a detailed list of data consumption, including consumption for individual applications. Although considering the size of data packages in Orange, the watch itself is unlikely to be used up.

Let us make sure that the service is active.

And you can take care of the watch itself.

It definitely does not take a lot of time.

Apple Watch LTE - how does it work? What applications can you use?

And here you can distinguish two cases. Of course, we skip this when Apple Watch is in the immediate range of the iPhone - in this case the watch works exactly like a normal variation.

The first case is when Apple Watch is away from the iPhone, but the other one is turned on and somehow connected to the network. In this system works ... well, actually everything.

We can use all functions of Apple Watch without any restrictions. Third-party applications synchronize with their servers, we can call whom we like, we can send and receive all kinds of text messages (not only from iMessage users), reply to emails and so on, and so on.

So if our iPhone is somewhere, it's turned on and connected to the network - no matter how far away from us - our Apple Watch LTE should not surprise us with refusing to do anything (unless we use long-obsolete applications using the older API). It becomes just a tiny iPhone that we wear on the wrist.

Note: just in case, I can not guarantee that absolutely all applications will work in such a system. But there is a good chance that the vast majority of them will function absolutely normal.

The situation becomes a bit more complicated when the iPhone is turned off.

If in such an arrangement we want to send a message to someone who does not have iMessage - nothing like that. The message will remain unsent until the iPhone is turned on. If this person has iMessage - we can write with him at will. Fortunately, in the case of telephone connections, there is no such limitation - they are carried out without the slightest hitch.

Unfortunately, the problem also appears when we want to use the majority of third-party applications. Simply put - they just will not work. For example, MyFitnessPal, when disconnected from the iPhone network, always tries to add a meal with a mistake. If, however, the iPhone is somewhere there and it works, everything goes smoothly.

And that's actually the case with all external applications. If the iPhone is turned off and can not be a bridge , we will not get notifications from Facebook and Twitter. We can send and receive emails, listen to internet radio and Apple Music, communicate via iMessage, use Siri, navigation and a range of other programs from Apple, but when it comes to external applications, unfortunately in this mode they play only decorative icons.

Apple Watch LTE - is it worth it?

So far, my adventure with Apple Watke LTE is very short - I checked what and how it works, I checked what and when it does not work. Still, there are still a lot of questions that I will be looking for yet. For example - for how long the battery lasts in everyday (and less everyday) use? Is it really enough for me to take a short trip to the mountains with LTE and GPS turned on, without having to take my phone with me? Will the range at any point be good enough, just like in my phone? And many other similar questions.

Unfortunately, I am not able to check it out during short tests in a satisfying way - I would have to stay with Apple Watches LTE for much, much longer. But I know for one thing - even considering the limitations of this solution, I am absolutely sold the idea of the iPhone on the wrist. With my way of life, this equipment works perfectly - going for a walk or jogging or riding a bike, I do not have to worry about taking a phone with me. All I need is a little Apple Watch, which is still on my wrist for almost 24 hours.

I do not know anything else - will Apple Watch LTE come to me within this generation, whether I overcame the desire to buy and wait for the debut of the Series 5. Because the fact that my next watch will have LTE, I am absolutely sure. I'm just waiting for the Extra eSIM card to appear in Orange Flex and I'm ready to change .
