Two brand new tablets have hit Apple's offer. The portfolio in this segment has become as confusing as it is in the case of computers and telephones. Which iPad is worth buying and which models are better to let go?

Apple has known for years that its offer was transparent. Unfortunately, after the legendary and consisting of two columns and two rows of table Steve Jobs, which contained mobile and stationary products for professionals and amateurs, there was no trace left.

Which phone / tablet / Apple computer to buy?

In the case of phones, once it was enough to go to the store, ask for the latest model, pay and go home with the conviction that the best possible choice was made. And now? iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have their advantages and disadvantages, and there is no clear answer to the question of which smartphone is better: iPhone X from 2017 or one year later released on the iPhone XR .

In the computer segment it is even worse. The similar price shelf today is occupied by three devices: a 12-inch MacBook, a new 13-inch MacBook Air and a new 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar that has not been upgraded since 2017. In the case of tablets, where until now there was order, today we have two completely new models, so now we have a brothel here as well. Let's organize it.

iPad mini generation 5 (2019) - is it worth it?

  • Screen: 7.9-inches, 2048 x 1536 px;
  • Color space: P3 with True Tone;
  • Processor: Apple A12 Bionic;
  • Biometrics: Touch ID;
  • Memory: from 64 GB up;
  • Price: from 1899 PLN up.

The smallest tablet in Apple's offer is the iPad mini 5 presented today . The device looks at first glance just like the iPad mini 4 released in ... 2015. The biggest novelty is the fact that only a 7.9-inch screen supports the P3 color space and the first-generation Apple Pencil.

What is interesting, however, is not the cheapest tablet offered by the Cupertino company. iPad mini (2019) in the basic version costs as much as 1899 PLN. I see no reason to pay so much for this model. It is not much smaller than the 9.7-inch iPad, and the parameters of a larger and cheaper model are still enough to sketch on it.

It is a great pity that the manufacturer has not decided to sell this tablet from the version with 32 GB of internal memory. This would reduce the price to an acceptable level as for equipment with such an archaic appearance. The same stupid decision was made here as in the case of 12-inch MacBooks, which are not in the 128 GB version.

  • iPad mini 5 - advantages: screen with True Tone support with P3 color space, Apple A12 Bionic processor.
  • iPad mini 5 - disadvantages: outdated casing and thick frames, high price, no version with 32 GB of memory.
  • My rating: not worth it, because it is too expensive.

iPad 6th generation (2018) - is it worth it?

  • Screen: 9.7-inches, 2048 x 1536 px;
  • Color space : sRGB without True Tone;
  • Processor: Apple A10 Fusion;
  • Biometrics: Touch ID;
  • Memory: from 32 GB up;
  • Price: from PLN 1599 up.

The smallest iPad (mini) is not the cheapest at the same time. The least-slung device on the pocket is the 9.7-inch iPad from 2018 . Its housing also looks outdated for today, but here you can at least explain it with a low price - and lower than the iPad mini 5.

The iPad 6 generation is bigger than the iPad mini (2019). Its disadvantage is the processor - much older and much less efficient. However, there is nothing to demonize. We have this tablet at home, and the A10 Fusion still works very well, even when working with graphics using Apple Pencil.

It is a pity that Apple has not decided to release the seventh generation of this device. Apparently, however, the company decided that the refreshed 9.7-inch iPad with Aion Bionic, True Tone support and P3 color space would effectively discourage the purchase of other, poorly falling models in this context.

  • iPad 6th generation - advantages: low price even for the basic Apple tablet.
  • iPad 6th generation - disadvantages: obsolete casing, no support for True Tone and P3, old processor.
  • My rating: it's worth it because it has a great price / quality ratio.

3rd generation iPad Air (2019) - is it worth it?

  • Screen: 10.5 inches, 2048 x 1536 px;
  • Color space: P3 with True Tone;
  • Processor: Apple A12 Bionic;
  • Biometrics: Touch ID;
  • Memory: from 64 GB up;
  • Price: from PLN 2499 up.

Two years ago iPad Air 2 disappeared from the offer and replaced it with a regular 9.7-inch iPad (2017), which in many respects was closer to the iPad Air 1st generation. History repeats itself. The third-generation iPad Air, which went on sale today , is a refreshed iPad Pro 10.5. Unfortunately, it is not better in every respect.

However, other components have hit the housing of the previous model. Thanks to this, the new tablet has a better processor, but as a part of the savings the manufacturer gave up the screen refreshed at 120 Hz. It also does not support new styluses. Buying this equipment, which is not cheap at all, you have to agree to many compromises.

Buying an Apple tablet for about 2.5 thousand. PLN, I would consider three options. It may be more reasonable to pay extra for an 11-inch iPad Pro from 2018, choose a cheaper 9.7-inch iPad 6th generation, and purchase a 10.5-inch iPad Pro from outside the Apple Store (lower prices).

  • iPad Air 3rd generation - advantages - the screen and housing are not outdated, efficient components, support for the stylus (but only the 1st generation).
  • iPad Air 3rd generation - disadvantages - price, screen refreshed at 60 Hz, not 120 Hz, no Face ID.
  • My assessment: it's worth it, but on the condition of accepting compromises.

3rd Generation iPad Pro (2019) - is it worth it?

  • Screen (11): 11-inches, 2388 x 1668 px, 120 Hz;
  • Screen (12.9): 12.9 inches, 2732 x 2048 px, 120 Hz;
  • Color space: P3 with True Tone;
  • Processor: Apple A12X Bionic;
  • Biometrics: Face ID;
  • Memory: 64 GB up;
  • Price: PLN 3799 up.

This equipment does not need to be presented to anyone. The iPad Pro from 2018 is the creme de la creme of Apple's product offer in this segment. The device is available in two sizes with diagonals of 11 inches and 12.9 inches. It is a pity that it costs astronomical money.

The buyers will not be disappointed though. It is true that many people may be missing Touch ID (although after a few months I decided that Face ID is a better choice) and switching from Lightning port to USB-C (which has as many advantages as disadvantages), but iPad Pro in every other respect pierces its predecessors.

Unfortunately, the price is killing for this model. This is half as much as for iPad Air in 2019, and in a set with a keyboard it costs similar money as the MacBook laptops. Apple's offer now lacks the design model of the iPad Pro, which would not be aimed at professionals.
