My favorite SteelSeries earphones got my favorite base station. Arctis Pro Wireless - Review

Last year's "audiophile" SteelSeries Arctis Pro + GameDAC headset was a twine between the world of players and the world of music enthusiasts. Headset turned out to be an interesting experiment, but as a console player I was looking for something more comfortable and more versatile. That's why I put my hands on the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless set.

At the very beginning you have to indicate that Arctis Pro Wireless is neither a new headset nor a revealing headset. The wireless headset uses the same base station (transmitter) as the iconic Siberia Wireless H. Until I could not believe that the rectangular black box with a knob appeared on the market in 2013. How time flies. Even more amazing is that for the next six years, no accessories manufacturer came up with a better solution.

The SteelSeries transmitter is my favorite device of this type.

The gadget is very simple as well as very clever. Thanks to it, the user of wireless headphones can enjoy a virtually unlimited time of operation. When the battery is exhausted after about 10 hours of gameplay, all you have to do is to remove the ear muffs, remove the power source, and then replace it with the second battery added to the set. The place for the second battery is in the transmitter pocket, which is also the charging station.

In practice, we can always count on a backup source of energy. When we hear that the battery is close to discharging, it is enough to get up from the sofa, go to the transmitter and make a quick substitution. So simple and practical. It is a pity that no other manufacturer of headphones for gamers is using a similar solution. Wireless competition equipment must be either charged on the cable or embedded in the docking stations. In terms of wireless continuity, SteelSeries is still unparalleled.

The Arctis Pro Wireless transmitter is also a command center.

Use the push knob to adjust the device operation. We can turn on surround sound, play with the equalizer, adjust the volume level between the game and chat, turn on one of the sound profiles or install the software update. All our activities will be displayed on a simple but stylish LED screen that matches the modern living room.

You can even get the impression that the transmitter allows more than it should. An inexperienced player easily mixes input and output sources as well as types of audio connections. Fortunately, any configuration settings can be saved, restored and reset. Which does not change the fact that the configuration process itself, especially when connecting a console set, could be a bit better described. I did not have a problem with him. My much younger cousin is like that.

It is worth noting that the transmitter allows you to transmit sound via USB, AUX and optical connection. In this way, the headset is compatible with a wide range of devices. A computer, console, TV set, smartphone, speakers - we will connect everything to the base station, if we only need it.

As a player with three consoles, I was most pleased with the support of two sound sources.

Active support of two simultaneous sound sources is for me to be-or-not-be a headset. All by buying a Nintendo Switch that does not support system voice chat. Playing Splatoona 2 or Super Smash Bros. We launch Ultimate with Discord's friends, mixing both sound sources. I get a Bluetooth audio from my TV set (game), and my friends hear it on a cable connected to a smartphone or a laptop (Discord). Makeshift, but surprisingly effective.

SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless can cope with a modern, stuffed apartment. I turn the wireless surround sound on PS4 in a blink of an eye into a hybrid configuration under the Switch. Then on the same headphones I watch Kingdom series with Asian zombies, which would not disturb other household members in reading books. Then I run WoW on a laptop, and after Bluetooth Robert Więckiewicz reads to me Blade Runner. Yes, you can live.

It is difficult to live with the knowledge that Arctis Pro Wireless costs PLN 1399.

APW is a very good, versatile headset made of high quality materials and components. However, the demand for PLN 1399 for a set, of which the device from 2013 is a significant part, is quite inflated. Especially since the wired version of the same headphones was valued at PLN 799. It turns out that the wireless adapter from six years ago, the WiFi module and the Bluetooth module were priced at an additional PLN 600. A lot. Especially that in terms of sound quality, the equipment for PLN 799 and PLN 1399 is not even one iota, if it is connected to the console.

Of course, it is not known since today that the gaming equipment of recognized companies is paid extra. Margins imposed on branded peripheries are gigantic, and yet business is constantly growing, along with the flourishing popularity of e-sport and increasingly better earnings of Poles. I understand that. I accept this. However, even such a blaséd tester of the equipment as I feel that at the rate of PLN 1399 per box is something really wrong.

I can not write a bad word about the sound for it. Arctisy are headphones not only for games.

Most headsets designed for video games have such a blasted bass and low tones so conquered that listening to good music practically does not make sense. Especially in lossless format, when we are dealing with rock, metal or other stringers in high tones. Headphones for players are primarily an unnatural cinematic impact and digital surround sound. These are completely different accents than in classic headphones.

Despite this low trend, the Arctis are one of the few handsets for players, where listening to music is not only possible, but pleasant as well. Of course, if we set up the set for the music stage before. You have to fall over your head to buy SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless for listening to your favorite bands. However, if you do not have any good music headphones at hand, Arctisy will do the job as well as you can. The same can not be written about Razers or Astro.

Of course, the most important thing for the player will be digital surround sound.

This is an element that gives a real advantage on network game servers. A good virtual spatial scene allows you to "see" your rivals through the walls, with a precise sense of the direction of the approaching threat. It's no different on the Arctis. The set is based on DTS Headphone technology: X v2.0, which in my opinion is noticeably better than the older, stricter Dolby Digital. Which does not change the fact that DTS also has to be afraid of market competition.

In Xperi (the company responsible for DTS), you should slowly think about turning the standard up. After what Razer showed through THX Spatial Audio , the DTS begins to fall out less favorably. Of course Headphone: X is still a spatial leader who will be more than adequate for the player. Thanks to the Arctisom, you can actually shoot blindly, being aware of the enemies on your back or taking place on the flanks. The headphones will certainly not let you down on the battlefield and will be more than sufficient for many years to come. Unfortunately, like the vast majority of headphones on the market, Pro Wireless does not cope with the spatial vertical axis.

A great set at an unbelievable price

Arctis Pro Wireless is an elegant, versatile, nice and versatile headset (not only) for games. Unfortunately, the price of the headset is obscenely high. This is the main drawback of this device and one of the few complaints about SteelSeries. Another element that bothers me is the lack of a separate voice chat volume knob on the earpiece housing. Changing ChatMix channels is only available from the transmitter level. At 1399, you can also require a slightly better microphone. The one in Pro Wireless is just good, but it was without any sensation.

The biggest advantages:

  • Virtually infinite time of wireless operation
  • One of the few headphones for players who can handle music
  • Care for medium and high tones
  • Great versatility of the set
  • Support for two audio sources at the same time
  • Elegant design
  • Huge convenience

The biggest drawbacks:

  • PLN 1399 is an obscenely high price
  • There is no separate chat volume control on the housing
  • "Only" good microphone
  • No network plug in the set
  • I prefer skin and foam from the sports mesh of ear-flaps (private preference)

In the final analysis, the Arctis Pro Wireless headset is one of the best sets a modern player can make. However, while few years ago Siberia Wireless H of the same manufacturer was unrivaled, the competition for wireless Arctis grows like mushrooms after rain. Steel still has no equal in the area of battery management and audio versatility, but in other areas it must already look back.

If the Pro Wireless price drops to a three-digit amount, you can take the blind.
