iPhone XR2, or swan song LCD screens on Apple smartphones
Apple plans to discontinue LCD screens on iPhones for OLEDs. I feel a surprise comparable to that which road builders experience every year.
From the very beginning the manufacturer of iPhones used LCD panels. Screens made in this technology are still cheaper and easier to produce than modern ones - albeit not without their flaws - OLEDs, which fancy the competition.
The company from Cupertino decided on OLEDs first on Apple Watch. Then she finally managed to find partners who would be able to quickly produce a large number of smartphones' displays to fit their flagship phone model.
Apple did not decide to completely give up LCD screens on iPhone smartphones anyway.
The first OLED screen in an Apple phone - because the screens appeared earlier in this type of watches - appeared on the iPhone X in the autumn of 2017. However, the smartphones iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus debuted in the past, in which LCD panels were still used.
A year later, the proportions reversed in the autumn. First, there were two phones with OLEDs, namely the iPhone XS (direct successor of the iPhone X) and the iPhone XS Max (ie the model with an even larger screen). A while after they got to sell, however, a cheaper iPhone XR with LCD screen.
It looks like the iPhone XR will have at least one direct successor.
As we can read on the Cult of Mac portal, Apple plans to get rid of LCD screens from all of its phones by 2020. However, this should not surprise anyone - it is a natural step for a company that has decided to use OLED panels in the flagship phone model.
More interesting is the fact that in 2019 will appear another iPhone with LCD screen. This probably means that the iPhone XR will not share the fate of the iPhone 5c and iPhone SE models, which direct successors never came. You can expect that the iPhone XR2 will appear.
This information corresponds with earlier rumors that Apple will again be presenting three iPhones again this year. The offer is to change significantly in the next year. This is great news for customers and ... fatal for Japan Display - subcontractor for Apple producing LCD screens.
