CS: GO tournament with new rules at IEM 2019

Football fans are already breaking their heads to understand the new system ...

Katowice IEM will start in less than a month. Today we learned that matches will be played according to the modified Swiss system.

The first qualifying round at the ESL Arena - The Challengers Stage will start on February 14th. It will be attended by 16 teams - 10 from regional tournaments of a lower rank (Minory) and 6, which placed on places 9-14 during the London Major FaceIT.

The games will last until February 20. Then 8 teams will remain on the battlefield, which will advance to the next phase - Legends Stage. There will already be waiting for them so-called. London legends, or 8 best teams from the above-mentioned Major.

How will they find the best eight among themselves?

IEM will use the modified Swiss system.

The usual Swiss system is relatively often used during e-sports events. It was based on him even IEM in Chicago, when the teams in the first phase were selected in pairs randomly. Later, only those with the same balance of victories played with each other. The teams with the highest number of wins were promoted to the next phase.

Theoretically, the organizer can decide that the teams that have won three matches will go to the next stage. Some of them will qualify after three meetings, and others after five. Those that after five games will have less than three wins will fall out. In this way the system was arranged during the ESL One tournament in Cologne.

In Katowice, it will be a bit different.

First, the sixteenth teams independently will prepare the classification of fifteen competitors. He will give them places from the first to the fifteenth, depending on their own opinion about the strength of opponents.

On this basis, the system will reject extreme assessments and prepare an ELO ranking (chess players use such a ranking), in which the highest ranked teams will have the most points. The ranking will be the base for placing teams in each of the "Swiss rounds". Win will give points, and the loser will receive them, which will affect the position in the ranking.

Thanks to this, teams on a similar level will have a similarly difficult route to promotion, counted by the position of opponents with which they must face. This will fix one of the disadvantages of the earlier system, eliminating at least part of the random coefficient.

The most important matches played for three wins.

This is not the end of changes. Players often complain about the BO1 system, ie the first victory , when one map decides about victory or loss. And even the best team can have a worse moment .

That is why in Katowice the matches deciding about promotion or defeat will be played in the best-of-3 system, ie up to three wins. In total, of the 33 games in the Swiss system up to 13 will count at least three rounds.

This phase will last from 21 to 24 February at the International Congress Center (MCC). The matches will be played in front of a live audience, not just on the stream. The knockout phase will be played just like in London.

Changes - although small, it's a plus.

The improved system reduces randomness, at the price of transparency. It is not a simple ladder, known for example from the football championships, but after a while getting to know the rules offers more justice. There is no ladder for losers yet, but then at IEM we would need four, not three, weekends.
