We were abusing yesterday's Cortana situation so suddenly we will not be going back to digging down so fast. The situation of Microsoft's virtual assistant is very similar to the one in which the Groove music service was not long ago.

This is a service that few people already use. And although it is further developed, Microsoft is more and more willing to take on brothers with Amazon and his Alexa, introducing its service in its products and services. Just as he was fraternizing with Spotify when he considered closing Groove. Well, at least you can make a post mortem at Cortana. In the form of an API for artificial intelligence, which Microsoft provides to Azure companies who want to create their own assistant on its foundations.

For now, however, Cortana is alive. Although it is marginalized in Windows 10.

Windows 10 for PCs and tablets is the last marketplace that can not be changed from the default digital assistant to a third party. An exception are selected modern notebooks of several partners, in which the Microsoft system is modified to support Alexa natively.

It has a quite interesting side effect. Polish users due to the lack of access to Cortana in our country may not know, but Microsoft's assistant replaces the system's search service. What is inconvenient for the development of Windows, this module is not developed by Microsoft departments dealing with the operating system. The developers of Microsoft's OS do not have much impact on the development of the assistant. Their duty and department dealing with the development of Cortana is simply to make both creations work with each other. Apparently, the cooperation between the two teams was not easy. And the mentioned side effect?

It is a stagnation in the development of the Windows system search engine itself. And so it is - of course in theory - a blind hole until Cortana appears in the system. Only Microsoft is getting ready for the failure of his assistant. For now, in Windows 10, he did not provide the API for external assistants.

But he threw Cortana out of the Windows 10 search engine.

The latest version of the test version of the 19H1 update for Windows 10 no longer integrates Cortana into the search appliance. Even in markets where it is available. The system finder is simply a system search engine, and Cortana has been hidden into a small taskbar button. This is also reflected in the viscera of the system: Cortana and the search engine now have separate settings, they are also separately configured by admins in the Group Policy.

That means two things. First of all, less interesting for users from Poland: Cortana's system application is further developed by the team responsible for it. Secondly: Windows departments take full control over the further development of the system search engine. They no longer have to look at their friends from Cortana, being able to implement new ideas faster. What are we going to take advantage of, in particular, by us, Poles, who still use the search engine in a form devoid of integration with Microsoft's assistant.

This is not the end of changes. The Start menu will be faster, font management easier.

The Start menu has been separated as a separate system process StartMenuExperienceHost (at the moment it is part of ShellExperienceHost responsible for the Windows shell). According to Microsoft, thanks to this will be easier to develop them, service, and the menu itself will be more responsive. And - in the event of a breakdown - it will not affect the rest of the interface.

The second new feature is the simplified addition of fonts to the system. Just drag the file with the new font to the Settings screen so that it is automatically added to Windows.

The Windows 10 19H1 update is expected to appear in the first half of this year. Its early test version can be checked through the Windows Insider program.
