What is the lettering on the back of Chinese cell phones supposed to do?

A trend continues to make its mark. More and more Chinese manufacturers are "decorating" their smartphones with large lettering. So I'm wondering what that's supposed to do when you don't even know what they mean exactly.

A commentary by Peter Hryciuk

Realme and Poco with large lettering

Manufacturers of Chinese smartphones want to stand out visually from the competition. What started with eye-catching colors, unusual color gradients and different materials is taken to the extreme with huge lettering. The Realme 8 Pro in particular shoots the bird here , see below. While the brand name is embedded relatively small on the back, the lettering "DARE TO LEAP" is denounced in capital letters on the back. As soon as I saw it, I asked myself what it was all about.

I had to see for myself what that could mean. Dare to jump? Dare the leap? huh Who should jump where? The fine print of the press release then says: "realme products empower young people to 'Dare to Leap' using the latest technology and design." Young people should therefore make the leap and use new technology . Well, maybe you should write the explanation for this saying somewhere on your cell phone so that you know what it means. I wouldn't write such a huge slogan on a cell phone that doesn't explain itself. Fortunately, the successor Realme 9 Pro only has the name.

But the latest high-end Realme GT2 Pro model features large lettering on the back with a signature (see cover photo). Has AMG adopted the idea? There the engine builder signs a plaque on the engine. So I don't need that.

Incidentally, Realme is not the only manufacturer who makes a mistake with the font size. The Xiaomi subsidiary Poco has also made the logo on the back a little larger . According to the principle of the market crier: HERE I AM. The fact that most people don't even know Poco doesn't matter here. It wouldn't be so bad if you would at least do it consistently. But that doesn't happen. The Poco X3 Pro has such a bold logo on the back, the Poco F3 doesn't. The phones were unveiled in Germany at the same time.

Different target groups could now be cited. Realme 8 Pro and Poco X3 Pro more for the young people who like to present logos?! But Poco and "DARE TO LEAP"? With the successor Poco X4 Pro 5G, the name moves right next to the camera:

Why would I want to see this all the time? I can somehow understand that with Apple, Nike, Diesel, Adidas or similar brands, but not with any cheap cell phones from China.

Hopefully just a short trend

I personally don't understand this trend towards huge text on mobile phones . Anyone who thinks such a China cell phone is great will buy it and use a protective cover to hide the lettering. Since the lettering is then not visible anyway, I see no reason why this unsightly trend should be followed at all. The mobile phones don't look any nicer as a result and I would question the added value for the brand. A small logo is okay, but it doesn't have to be more. It remains to be hoped that the trend will quickly disappear and that more manufacturers will not join in.
