Samsung or Apple: Where can you find more smartphones for 500 euros?

Something like this rarely happens: Within a few days, both Apple and Samsung presented new smartphones that play in a similar price range. So what could be more obvious than putting the iPhone SE 3 and Galaxy A53 in line and answering the question of where there are more smartphones for around 500 euros?

Visually, the iPhone SE 3 and Galaxy A53 could hardly be more different, but the two smartphones are united by the basic idea behind them. Apple and Samsung want to use them to attract price-conscious customers who want as many smartphones as possible for little money.

iPhone SE 3 vs. Samsung Galaxy A53: duel in 8 rounds

This is not possible without some compromises in terms of equipment, although the two top dogs set their own accents in this regard. We'll find out what those are in 8 rounds in which we'll have the iPhone SE 3 and the Galaxy A53 duel against each other.

Design Workmanship Performance Display Cameras Software Support Storage Battery

It starts on the next page...

Well-meaning people would describe the design of the iPhone SE 3 as iconic or cult, and that may be true in part. But the fact is that Apple has been recycling the basic design since 2014 – i.e. since the iPhone 6. The thick bezels around the display look like they have fallen out of time. Undoubtedly, the Galaxy A53 looks more modern with narrow screen bezels and punch-hole camera.

Winner : Galaxy A53.

Both smartphones are certainly excellently made. But while Samsung relies on plastic, the iPhone SE 3 has an elegant glass housing. It feels more valuable in the hand.

Winner : iPhone SE 3.

This is where Apple comes up trumps. The iPhone SE 3 contains the A15 Bionic and thus not only the chip that also works in the current iPhone 14, but the bottom line is the fastest smartphone processor at the moment - by a wide margin. The Exynos 1280 in the Galaxy A53 isn't a snail either and should ensure a brisk everyday performance, but it doesn't come close to the A15 chip.

Winner : iPhone SE 3.

The performance crown may go to the iPhone SE 3, but the Galaxy A53 is in a league of its own when it comes to the display: Larger, more vivid colors thanks to Super AMOLED technology, higher resolution and smoother display with 120 Hz. The Galaxy A53 offers in every respect the better screen .

Winner : Galaxy A53.

The picture looks similar with the cameras. The iPhone SE 3 has to be content with a 12 MP single camera, while the Galaxy A53 has a quadruple camera with a 64 MP main sensor on board . The front camera is also much sharper with 32 MP to 7 MP. The iPhone SE 3 should certainly not take bad pictures, as the predecessor already showed. But the Galaxy A53 simply offers more here.

Winner : Galaxy A53.

Apple has traditionally been strong when it comes to software support. If the past serves as a yardstick, the iPhone SE 3 should receive new iOS updates for six to seven years. Although Samsung has done a lot on this front and also guarantees the Galaxy A53 four major Android updates and five years of security updates , Samsung is unlikely to come close to Apple - even if the gap is significantly decreasing.

Winner : iPhone SE 3.

Apple is known for its storage stinginess and the iPhone SE 3 is no exception. At the starting price of 519 euros, there is just a measly 64 GB of memory. Anyone who grabs the Galaxy A53 gets four times as much with 256 GB – and even pays 10 euros less at 509 euros. The variant with 128 GB of memory only costs 449 euros. In addition, the Samsung smartphone also offers a microSD slot for memory expansion.

Winner : Galaxy A53.

Apple is silent on the exact mAh capacity of the iPhone SE 3. However, it is unlikely that the new model will have a larger battery than its predecessor. Means: The iPhone SE 3 should also have a rather weak battery with 1,821 mAh. The Galaxy A53 can only laugh wearily at this: With 5,000 mAh, the Samsung smartphone offers a battery that is almost three times as large - and also charges faster with 25 watts vs. 18 watts. However, the iPhone SE 3 can also be charged wirelessly. Buyers of the Galaxy A53 have to do without wireless charging.

Winner : Galaxy A53.

With 5:3, the Galaxy A53 wins the comparison with the iPhone SE 3. The Galaxy A53 plays in the champions league in particular when it comes to the display, memory and battery, while the iPhone SE 3 is ahead in terms of performance and build quality. Both smartphones are undoubtedly good. But if you don't care about the operating system and if you can handle both iOS and Android, you get more smartphone for your money with the Galaxy A53 .
