Realme confirms it s working on 5G flagship tablet, but not a foldable one
Because of Covid, Android tablets were suddenly totally in in 2020 and 2021. Actually, the market for them was dead. But home office and home schooling caused a hype for tablets. Realme was one of those companies that jumped on the bandwagon and introduced its first tablet, the affordable Realme Pad.
This isn't the company's only foray into the tablet market, however, as the company has confirmed many things to TechRadar about Realme's imminent future.
The company's Vice President, Madhav Sheth, spoke to TechRadar about many aspects of the brand and its devices ahead of the launch of the Realme GT 2 series at the annual technology show MWC 2022.
Tablets are on the rise
One question TechRadar asked related to the Realme Pad. Realme decided to launch a cheaper Android slate than many of its competitors. Well, it turns out that more devices are on the way.
Referring to the company's rapid adoption in many different tech sectors, Sheth confirmed: "Tablets are definitely one of them and we will be launching new products soon, from the entry-level device to the premium 5G flagship tablet."
"Premium 5G flagships" sounds exciting, as if Realme is working on its own alternative to the iPad Pro or Samsung Galaxy Tab S8.
"In 2022 we will enter more than 15 new categories and launch more than 50 new products"
Madhav Sheth
No foldable devices
Another type of product that is currently being hyped is of course foldable phones. Everyone has been waiting for a foldable Realme ever since a rumor said the Realme GT 2 would have a foldable spin-off. Well, Sheth didn't mince words.
"We have no plans to launch [a foldable] device any time soon," he told TechRadar. That doesn't mean we're ruling out a Realme Fold for good though - "We've been working on many different forms of next-gen displays. Foldable displays are one of the key areas we looked at."
So it sounds like the company is considering foldable displays, but hasn't settled on a specific type or design just yet. It's likely just filing patents and investing in research and development, which could mean a foldable phone is still many years away.
