Qualcomm is no longer the leading Android chipmaker in the US
Qualcomm lost its crown as the Android chipmaker in global markets to MediaTek in 2020, but it managed to remain number one in the US for a few more quarters. Now it looks like there's a new number one chip maker for Android devices in the US.
MediaTek announced at the launch of the Dimensity 8000 series that it is the leading chipmaker for Android devices in the US, citing IDC statistics for the fourth quarter of 2021. More specifically, the Taiwanese chip designer said its chips accounted for 51 percent of the market, compared to Qualcomm's 47 percent.
MediaTek pointed to a slew of phones in the US that have helped the manufacturer achieve that goal. The success isn't a complete surprise given MediaTek's focus on the high-volume budget and mid-range segment for years.
