Several smartphone manufacturers have caught the foldable phone virus. We're all waiting for the next real competitor to Samsung's foldable devices, and it could possibly come from OnePlus in the future. According to Tech Radar, the Chinese manufacturer is working with Google on software for foldable devices. That means we could potentially see a foldable phone from OnePlus at some point in the future.
It's hard to deny that Samsung holds the title of "King of Foldable Smartphones". The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 were two very popular devices and everyone is excited for the next generation. In addition to Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Motorola and Oppo also have foldable smartphones in their portfolios, with many considering the Oppo Find N to be the current best implementation of the technology. And even Google plans to launch the Pixel Notepad in the fourth quarter of this year.
OnePlus also appears to be gearing up to join those ranks. During a media briefing, Gary Chen, head of OS product division, said the company is working closely with Google to develop OxygenOS 13. They're working on different aspects of the software, but one thing in particular caught everyone's attention.
Chen then said the companies are working on "how to introduce new features for foldable devices." That sounded a bit vague, but it means the companies are working to make the foldable software experience on OnePlus devices the best it can be.
After the initial excitement, Chen told reporters that this is a more visionary, long-term work. That means the company doesn't currently have a device in the works and we shouldn't expect a foldable phone from OnePlus this year.
It's possible we could see it either next year or in 2024. OxygenOS 13 will be based on Android 13. This is significant as Android 13 will inherit the large screen optimizations introduced in Android 12L. OxygenOS 13 looks set to take advantage of these tweaks as well.
