The next top processor for Android phones will probably come sooner than expected. Qualcomm would like to present the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus as early as May. The first flagships could already be equipped with the top SoC in the summer.
Qualcomm's top processor for Android is coming sooner
According to new reports, Qualcomm wants to introduce a more powerful variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 sooner than expected. The American producer could already present the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus at the beginning of May 2022 - and not only in late June.
The first cell phones that rely on the top processor can then be expected as early as the summer. The first smartphones with the SoC may already be available in June (source: Yogesh Brar on Twitter).
However, a massive leap upwards is not to be expected with the Plus version. If nothing has changed in Qualcomm's plans, then the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus is an intermediate step. The manufacturer has been offering a kind of refreshment of the respective top model for a few years, which is considered a slightly upgraded version.
Qualcomm has not yet explained exactly how the Plus version will differ from the standard version. According to initial rumours, it should be less prone to overheating and reduced performance. Qualcomm should continue to rely on TSMC's 4 nm process.
Here's how the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is made:
New Android processor: Manufacturers are queuing
Qualcomm does not have to worry about buyers for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. Allegedly, Lenovo, Motorola, OnePlus and Xiaomi have already expressed their interest in being among the first customers. We may see the top processor in the Xiaomi 12 Ultra or in the manufacturer's Mix 5 series. It could also be found on the Motorola Frontier.
In addition to the SoC for flagships, Qualcomm should also introduce new models from the Snapdragon 700 series in early May. Here, Qualcomm has to work hard, because the competition from MediaTek has recently caught up a lot in terms of performance and costs.
