MediaTek launches two new 5nm chipsets: Dimensity 8000 and 8100

MediaTek Dimension 8000 and 8100

MediaTek's high-end Dimensity 9000 chipset is yet to be seen in a phone, but that's not stopping the chipmaker from unveiling even more of its arsenal for 2022. Two new SoCs based on the 5nm process have just been released - the Dimensity 8000 and 8100.

Both the Dimensity 8000 and Dimensity 8100 are said to offer high-end features and performance at a more affordable price point. They will likely be used on more affordable but still high quality phones.

Realme will be among the first to launch a phone with one of these chips - the Realme GT Neo 3, which will also feature Oppo's new 150W SuperVOOC charging technology.

The Dimensity 8000 and Dimensity 8100 are mostly identical, with a few specific differences here and there. All in all, there are no hidden surprises, so don't expect anything revolutionary here.

Specifications of the Dimensity 8100 and 8000

Both chipsets are equipped with octa-core CPUs consisting of four Arm Cortex-A78 performance cores and another four A55 efficiency cores. A slight difference, however, is that the former are clocked at 2.85 GHz on the Dimensity 8100, while they are clocked at 2.75 GHz on the Dimensity 8000. Both have the A55 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz.

As for the GPU, both SoCs are equipped with the same one - a Mali-G610 MC6. However, MediaTek claims that the Dimensity 8100 has a 20 percent higher GPU frequency than the Dimesnity 8000.

Luckily, both have an Imagiq 780 ISP that enables 4K 60FPS video recording in HDR10+, 2X lossless zoom, AI-Motion unblur and AI-NR/HDR photos. Also, they are equipped with the MediaTek 5th Gen APU 580 that helps with AI tasks like the camera features mentioned above.

However, a small detail is that the Dimensity 8100's APU has a 25 percent increased frequency, which further increases the speed of the phones equipped with it.

Of course, both the Dimensity 8100 and Dimesnity 8000 have a 5G modem with support for dual SIM dual standby, maximum download speeds of 4.7 Gbps and 2CC carrier aggregation (200 MHz). There's also Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth LE audio with dual-link true wireless stereo support, and Bluetooth 5.3.
