iPhone M1: Apple simply has to copy this idea

To make this clear in advance: The following "iPhone M1" is just the crazy, but brilliant idea of an Italian designer, but this concept still packs a punch. So much so that we'd like Apple to just "copy" the idea out of the box.

Antonio De Rosa is no stranger, the design specialist from Italy has created such impressive concepts as the "iPhone VR" or Tesla's "first" smartphone in recent months. With the design called "iPhone M1" , the product designer takes on a tried and tested problem of Apple's smartphones. Since the iPhone X, they have had this annoying notch in the upper display area - called "Notch" . Although users have now gotten used to it, undisturbed screen enjoyment would still be welcome - without the ugly punch-hole alternative, as suspected for the iPhone 14.

iPhone M1: Asymmetry makes the notch disappear at Apple

Instead of relying on previously less sophisticated in-display cameras, the designer prefers to use a trick that nobody has really thought of before. He simply visibly shifts the square camera hump out of the housing and inserts it asymmetrically . The space gained in the front area is now simply used for the TrueDepth camera - Face ID and selfies are still possible, but the display underneath now shines flawlessly without a notch. Why hasn't anyone thought of that before?

We don't have a direct answer, but maybe a guess. As ingenious as the idea may be, an asymmetrical iPhone takes a lot of getting used to . But it doesn't look bad. I mean, if you get used to the notch beforehand, you can certainly get used to it too. Any experiments with "hole cameras" as just suspected for this year and the already mentioned cams under the display can then be dispensed with by Apple. Saves development costs and the final result is no different for the user, you could already benefit from the advantages of a real full-format display.

Apart from that, the draft still offers many a detail. The name suggests the use of the Apple M1 , for example. It's debatable how sensible it would be to use an iPhone with a desktop CPU. It might make sense if such an iPhone would serve as a Mac or iPad replacement using a docking station. But the concept doesn't go that far.

Even more cool features

In any case, you can look forward to an improved sound with the "iPhone M1", because the loudspeakers are not only located in the lower area as usual, but also in the upper area of the mobile phone. The small additional holes for the speakers already refer to it.

An in-display fingerprint sensor and the existence of a Lightning connector are also recognizable in the concept. The latter is then anything but "innovative" and may even be "buried" by Apple in a year or two for future models, according to the rumor mill.

Nevertheless, the witty idea of the asymmetrical camera phalanx alone is worth more than just a look. I think Apple should take a closer look. In the end, it could be worthwhile for the user and of course also for the manufacturer. The ladies and gentlemen in Cupertino only have to find the courage to actually implement something like this themselves.
