With the upcoming iPad Air 5, Apple is planning a surprising change of course. According to the latest reports, the tablet will not contain Apple's A15 chip as expected, but instead will be treated to real professional performance.
Equivalent to the iPad mini 6, it was previously assumed that the new iPad Air 5 will also have Apple's A15 chip. However, a new report contradicts this. As of now, it's going to be Apple's M1, the same chip that's already found in the iPad Pro and, of course, a range of Macs (source: 9to5Mac).
iPad Air 5 with M1 instead of A15: turning point for the Apple tablet
This is tantamount to a change of course, because the associated leap in performance was previously reserved for the iPad Pro. A huge upgrade for the iPad Air, which is drifting a whole lot more in the professional direction. Think again about the performance advantage: the M1, while older than the A15, is still 50 percent faster than the latest A chip and 70 percent faster than the A14 that has previously been doing its job in the Air.
The M1 was already presented together with MacBook Pro and Air at the end of 2020:
This is due to the chip design. The A15 has 5 computing and 5 graphics cores. However, the M1 clearly comes out on top in comparison - 8 computing and 7 graphics cores plus 8 GB of working memory in the iPad Pro. So this service package is now moving to the iPad Air. But why?
Why is Apple doing this?
One can only speculate, maybe Apple finally wants to establish the iPad Air as a MacBook alternative for the masses . There are still enough differences to the iPad Pro apart from the processor – ProMotion display, camera, Face ID. The iPad Pro should also soon have an even better chip with the Apple M2 and thus differ more in this respect.
But we will see whether Apple actually makes the proclaimed change of course at the Apple event on March 8th – it starts at 7 p.m. sharp. The third generation iPhone SE, a new Mac and a cheap display for the same are also expected.
