One of the main reasons people uninstall apps is to free up storage space. To avoid unnecessary uninstalls and help users get more out of their devices, Google has started work on a new feature that will enable app archiving.
Archiving is a new feature that allows users to temporarily reclaim approximately 60 percent of app storage space by removing portions of the app rather than uninstalling it entirely. An archived app remains on the device and can easily be restored to the latest available compatible version while preserving user data.
With the release of the upcoming Bundletool 1.10 version, archiving will be made available to all developers using App Bundles. For apps built with Android Gradle Plugin 7.3, there will be a new type of APKs - archived APKs. Archived APKs are very small APKs that preserve user data until the app is restored.
Once implemented, archiving will bring great benefits to both users and developers. Instead of uninstalling an app, users can "archive" it to temporarily free up storage space and quickly and easily reactivate the app.
