Google distributes final version of Android 12L for all Pixel smartphones

Android 12L

Google hasn't released a minor update for Android in years. Instead, it has limited itself to the annual major updates and fixes bugs throughout the year with the monthly security updates. However, with the release of Android 12L, Google is returning to this idea, which mainly focuses on improvements for foldable devices and other devices with large screens. After months of beta testing, Android 12L is now rolling out to supported Pixel devices.

Android 12L introduces two-column layouts and other large-screen tweaks across the system and core apps, most notably in the quick settings and notification panel. There's also a taskbar for large-screen devices that works similarly to the Chrome OS and Windows taskbar and macOS Dock.

The split-screen mode itself has also been updated, with a more prominent dividing line (similar to Samsung's One UI and other third-party skins that have been around for a while). There are also a handful of other helpful changes, like letterboxing for portrait-only apps on tablets and new gestures for notifications.

The stable release comes after several developer previews and beta releases, including the first beta in December, beta 2 in January, and beta 3 in February. Google had already announced that the final version would be released sometime after February.

Google wrote in its blog post: "Throughout the year we'll be bringing 12L to your favorite tablets and foldable devices, with planned updates from Samsung, Lenovo and Microsoft. And we will continue to develop more features and functionality to help you get the most out of your larger screen devices in Android 13 and beyond."

Android 12L is now rolling out to most currently supported Pixel phones as the March 2022 feature drop/monthly security update. Google said a version for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be released "later this month."
