GeekBench Removes Samsung Phones For Slow Applications

Samsung Galaxy S22 series

Last week it was revealed that Samsung's GOS (Games Optimization Service) is artificially slowing down apps. The service throttles both CPU and GPU performance for over 10,000 apps to protect the system.

It was noticeable that GOS did not slow down any benchmark apps. This questionable behavior has already infuriated fans. Popular smartphone benchmarking service Geekbench has now confirmed that it is phasing out select Samsung phones for this app throttling.

GOS slows down GPU and CPU performance on Samsung smartphones for games and apps. Although these devices come with powerful hardware, users cannot get the best performance out of them. Benchmark apps like 3D Mark and Geekbench remain untouched. So when the user runs a benchmark, the CPU and GPU can work at maximum performance.

Geekbench has confirmed that it will remove the new Galaxy S22 series from the Geekbench browser, in addition to the entire Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20 and S21 series. The Galaxy Note and A series are not excluded as they do not appear to be affected by GOS. A statement explains this in more detail:

"GOS decides whether to throttle applications (or not) based on application identifiers, not application behavior. We consider this a form of benchmark manipulation as the main benchmark applications, including Geekbench, are not throttled by this service."

Samsung has responded to the controversy, stating that GOS is used to prevent devices from overheating. The company confirmed that there will be a software update in the future that will add a performance priority button.
