EU wants to ban built-in batteries

Xiaomi Mi Note 10

What good times it used to be when you simply opened the back of your smartphone to change a battery. For almost all manufacturers, however, these times are long gone. But maybe a simple battery change could celebrate its comeback soon.

Replacing the battery in a smartphone is no longer so easy to do these days. And if so, it usually costs a lot of money. With a slightly older device, it is no longer worth switching and the smartphone usually ends up in the garbage. But the EU wants to pull the trigger here.

The European Parliament now wants to ban the permanent installation or gluing of batteries. This should make changing batteries much easier in the future. And that not only helps the environment but also protects the purse of the buyer. Users should be able to replace batteries with standard tools. The manufacturer must ensure that there are replacement batteries available for a product's expected lifetime.

According to the FAZ, manufacturers will have to inform consumers in the future about the energy and performance of the batteries and provide information about the durability and charging time.

Let's see how the manufacturers will react to this. They will certainly not be pleased, that should be clear.
