{Disarmed} ColorOS 12.1: The most important new features, functions and extras [Video]

Color OS 12

Oppo has grown almost exponentially in recent years, and while Oppo didn't have the best user interface at one time, ColorOS 12 and 12.1 have significantly less iOS influence and the result is a nice alternative full of excellent features.

ColorOS 12.1 should again offer a few new features. But there won't be any major changes, they will probably only come with ColorOS 13. But here are some of the key features of the upcoming ColorOS 12.1 release.

Background image based theming

There are numerous variations on how Google's wallpaper-based theming is implemented by OEMs, but in Oppo's case it's a little more customizable. The Personalization tab in Settings allows you to select parts of the wallpaper to have the system accent applied.

A preview shows where your color selection will be applied. From in-app buttons to quick settings, everything is crisp and clear. The only downside is that unlike Dynamic Color in Material You for Pixel phones, individual apps may not adhere to system-level colors.

Default Google Apps

Oppo smartphones aren't without baggage, so it's great to see at least some take advantage of the removal of some custom apps and the use of standard Google apps including Messages and Chrome instead. Google Messages alone will certainly help increase RCS adoption. The Google Phone app is now the default dialer in ColorOS 12 with improved features like built-in caller ID and spam detection and more.

Deeper haptic controls

Exclusive to ColorOS 12.1, the O-Haptic feature allows you to customize and tune the Find X5 Pro's vibration feedback. You can increase the intensity of the vibrations and even adjust whether the vibrations feel "crisp" or "soft" under your thumb. This applies to all areas of the device, so the settings can produce wildly different results depending on how you set them.

Privacy dashboard + more controls

New to Android 12 are improved privacy controls, which include the Privacy Dashboard settings page. This is just a hub for all sensor and device data access requests over a 24-hour period.

The Privacy Dashboard is a useful tool for managing and monitoring sensors, location data, and other permissions. However, ColorOS 12's built-in Privacy feature lets you go a few steps further and remove personal information from photos.

Other options include microphone and camera indicators. You can use the toggle switches to instantly block access to the camera and microphone in the quick settings.

Rounding out Android 12's privacy features are new pop-ups and options to restrict access to your device's location. You can choose to allow apps to access your device's "exact" or "approximate" location.

Dark mode setting

Oppo has added three levels of customization for the built-in dark theme in ColorOS 12, allowing you to adjust the color depth: Advanced, Medium, and Gentle. It's a shame you can't fully adjust the dark theme, but this extra layer of adjustment at least allows it to be adjusted to a level that you prefer.

RAM expansion

It's hard to find fault with the performance of a flagship smartphone these days, but the ability to effectively "increase" the available RAM through the use of onboard storage could be a game-changer for lower-end devices. ColorOS 12 includes a built-in feature that allows up to 7GB of device memory to act as RAM, hopefully improving performance.

Canvas AOD

The Canvas AOD feature has jumped from the OnePlus phones to ColorOS - assuming you have a smartphone with an AMOLED screen. It's simply called "Portrait Silhouette" here, and it works in exactly the same way.

When you set an image as your lock screen, this feature creates a line-like sketch of your subject. When you unlock the device, the image will be displayed in full color and with all the details on your home screen.

floating window

The floating window feature has been around for a while, but it's still a powerful multitasking option, as any app can be expanded and running apps can be dropped anywhere on the screen for quick access or reopening. In combination with the integrated split-screen mode, up to three apps can be run on the screen.
