Corona warning app 2.20 now available

Corona warning app

The project team from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Deutsche Telekom and SAP has published version 2.20 of the Corona-Warn-App (CWA). With the update, the project team translated the CWA into Ukrainian, shortened the display of the increased risk (red tile) and improved notifications for risk encounters and status changes. In addition, the risk display has been adjusted after a positive test result. In addition, validity dates will no longer be displayed for convalescent certificates, as the validity of the certificates depends on local rules. Since March 29, 2022, users have also been able to have vaccination certificates reissued directly via the app.

Corona warning app available in Ukrainian

With version 2.20, the CWA is also available in Ukrainian. Users have been able to download it from the Ukrainian App/Play Store since early March. Now the project team has translated them completely into Ukrainian.

Changes in EU regulations: CWA allows reissuance of vaccination certificates directly via the app

Some CWA users these days will find the note "Update Certificate" under their booster certificate. This is not because their certificate has expired, but because the EU has changed the requirements for vaccination certificates for booster vaccinations. This means that certificates that do not meet the current requirements are still valid, but may not be recognized during an inspection. The changes primarily affect users who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or a post-recovery vaccine.

The reason for the change: The affected users only received one vaccination as a basic immunization, which the CWA entered as "vaccination 1 of 1". Her booster dose was coded appropriately as 'Vaccination 2 of 2'. However, this means that the CWA cannot distinguish this booster vaccination from "vaccination 2 of 2" for all those who have received two vaccinations for the primary immunization (vaccines from BioNTech, Moderna or AstraZeneca). As a result, the CWA does not recognize the booster shots of users who have been vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or received a post-recovery vaccine. In order to be able to distinguish these certificates in the future, the booster vaccination of the affected users will be coded as "Vaccination 2 of 1" with immediate effect.

The CWA automatically recognizes whether there are certificates that need to be exchanged and informs the relevant users. They can then voluntarily and free of charge request a new vaccination certificate directly through the CWA by tapping on the "Update Certificate" notice under their affected certificate. After you have given your consent, the certificate is sent to the Robert Koch Institute for verification. The RKI then issues the updated certificate and sends it back to the CWA. Users will then find their updated certificate in the Certificates tab as usual.

The old certificate is automatically moved to the recycle bin and permanently deleted there after 30 days.

Increased risk indicator shortened from 14 to 10 days

Furthermore, from version 2.20, the CWA only considers the last 10 days for the calculation of the infection risk and no longer the last 14 days as before. It is thus based on the current quarantine requirements . A red tile will automatically turn green again on the 11th day after the last risk encounter. As before, users cannot reset the red tile to green manually or by "free testing", as they can develop symptoms as a result of the risk encounter within these 10 days.

Adjustment of the risk display after a positive test result and notifications

The project team also adjusted the risk indicator after a positive test result. If users have registered a positive test in the CWA, they will now see the red tile in the event of an increased risk encounter. After 7 days, the tile will always be displayed again, regardless of whether there is an increased risk or not. Previously, the CWA users who shared a positive test result no longer displayed the risk map. Accordingly, they were no longer warned until they had manually deleted the test.

Furthermore, the CWA now notifies users if the date of the last encounter with increased risk on the red tile has changed. Previously, users were not notified again if they had another, more recent, higher-risk encounter after a risky encounter.

What is also new is that the CWA user is always informed when their G status has changed. This can be the case, for example, if you have added a certificate or the rules have changed.

Recovery certificates now without validity dates

As of version 2.20, validity dates are no longer displayed on convalescent certificates. Since the validity of the certificates depends on local rules, the date of the first positive test on which the certificate is based is now displayed instead.

Improvement of the user interface

With version 2.20, the project team has also improved the user interface. On the one hand, users can no longer tap on the warnings in the contact diary, but only on the date. As before, the people and places that were entered there by the user but are not necessarily related to the warning are then displayed below this.

On the other hand, the project team has removed the QR code for the currently used certificate from the detail screen in the certificate area. The QR code is also on the certificate overview and is therefore not required again on the detail screen of the respective person.

In addition, the CWA runs on Android 13, which according to Google should be released in autumn 2022.

Version 2.20 will be gradually rolled out to all users over a period of 48 hours. iOS users can now download the current app version manually from the Apple store. The Google Play Store does not offer a way to initiate a manual update. The new version of the Corona warning app will be available here within the next 48 hours.
