Apple pulls the plug on popular Mac: resurrection ruled out

With the introduction of the new Mac Studio and the associated Apple Studio Display, the iPhone manufacturer discontinued the once popular iMac with a 27-inch screen. According to a recent report, we must finally say goodbye to the thought of a successor.

Apple's plans: No more larger iMac in the future

Sooner or later, the last iMac with an Intel chip and a larger 27-inch display had to disappear from Apple's portfolio. On the day the new Mac Studio and the associated Apple Studio Display were presented, the time had come – discontinued, without an actual successor. This should also remain so in the future. Saying so are unspecified sources with knowledge of Apple's product pipeline, according to colleagues at 9to5Mac. A larger iMac with an Apple chip is therefore no longer expected in the near future (source: 9to5Mac).

This is surprising, as there were and still are reports of a new iMac Pro, an all-in-one computer from Apple with a larger display and powerful hardware. Some rumors predicted such a computer for the summer, but according to expert Ross Young, it was ultimately confused with the new 27-inch studio display , which was probably mistaken for the ominous iMac Pro. And then there are the reports of an iMac Pro, which is still in development at Apple and is not expected to come until 2023, according to the esteemed expert Ming-Chi Kuo, among others.

Apple's new power combo:

Apple Studio Display: The iMac Killer

All in all, this is pretty confusing. The question arises, how would such an iMac Pro fit into the portfolio? The Apple Studio Display (see Cyberport) basically closes this gap, partly also in terms of price. Can be combined with a Mac mini if you wish, or with a Mac Studio for more power. Two short sample calculations:

Best combination:

Mac mini (799 euros) + Apple Studio Display (1,749 euros) + Magic Mouse (85 euros) + Magic Keyboard (109 euros) = 2,742 euros

Cheapest Pro combination:

Mac mini (2,299 euros) + Apple Studio Display (1,749 euros) + Magic Mouse (85 euros) + Magic Keyboard (109 euros) = 4,242 euros

Perhaps an iMac Pro would have a new chance with this approach? Anyway worth seeing:

Not a bargain in either case, but still a reasonable price calculation by Apple's standards. So there is actually a lot to be said against a resurrection of the 27-inch iMac. Should Apple alone not be successful with the Studio Display and the new strategy, a rethink could begin. However, if you look at current demand, it doesn't look like it.
