Apple promises improvement: New display fails at a crucial point

It was awaited for a long time, now the first testers were allowed to take a close look at it. Unfortunately, the new Apple Studio Display leaves them with mixed feelings - the manufacturer probably screwed up, literally. What went wrong and how does Apple want to promise improvement?

The new Apple Studio Display not only wants to replace the 27-inch iMac, but is also recommended as an external monitor for basically every Mac - whether new Mac Studio, cheaper Mac mini or mobile MacBook. Such a product offers Apple more sales opportunities than just a new all-in-one computer with the same display. Stupid only if the first test ratings are rather meager.

Apple Studio Display: Webcam a disaster

One of the biggest points of criticism: the built-in camera. On paper, it should actually put all previous Mac webcams in the shade - 12 megapixels, ultra wide angle, follow mode (Center Stage) like on the latest iPads and also its own dedicated Apple A13 chip. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot to be honest. The webcam of the Apple Studio Display fails completely.

Joanna Stern from the Wall Street Journal even compares the picture quality with a smartphone from the stone age of the digital age (source: Wall Street Journal), quote:

"The Apple camera consistently delivered grainy and washed-out images. Some shots were missing so much detail that they reminded me of my old BlackBerry's camera. On the plus side, no one could see my frizzy hair."

Maybe just a subjective opinion and a bit exaggerated? Not if you look directly at the comparison pictures afterwards. The photo looks like it has been processed with the soft focus, details cannot be made out:

But what could it be? It becomes particularly clear in dark environments. Nilay Patel from "The Verge" tried several configurations and settings, but ultimately failed (source: The Verge):

"In fact, it looks awful in good light and downright miserable in low light. I've tried it on the Mac Studio and my MacBook Pro running macOS 12.3, and on both devices it produces a grainy, noisy image with virtually no detail. I've tried it in FaceTime, in Zoom, in Photo Booth, in QuickTime - the image quality is always the same bad. Disabling the "Center Stage" feature, which tracks you around the room, doesn't help. Turning portrait mode on and off doesn't help."

In short: Apple messed up a lot with the new Apple Studio Display and even confirmed this when asked by the two journalists. A representative from Apple informed the two that they "found an issue where the system is not behaving as expected". Subsequently, an improvement was promised by means of a software update. However, there was no answer as to what would be changed and when exactly it could be expected. But at least: Apple recognizes the problem and wants to improve it.

In the case of another point of criticism, however, this should not be so easy, because you have to get used to the built-in power cable for better or worse and hope that there will be no defects in the future . Otherwise it will be expensive because an exchange is not so easy to do. Customers should perhaps purchase AppleCare+ for the studio display right away – it adds up to an additional cost of 139 euros. But if you pay at least 1,749 euros for the display (see Cyberport), you can still afford this much security.
