Will Samsung finally discontinue the Note in 2022?

Samsung Galaxy Note 20

At first glance, the new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra could easily be confused with a Galaxy Note. Samsung's latest and greatest Android flagship has moved closer to what we've come to expect from the Galaxy Note models. It has not only increased in size and functionality, but is now also aesthetically adjusted. The question is, where is the Note?

In recent years, the coexistence of the two series has increasingly appeared to be no longer necessary. Originally, the Galaxy Note was Samsung's "oversized "professional" device: it promised the most power and flexibility for those willing to put up with the size of their pocket and the strain on their bank account.

The Galaxy S series, on the other hand, was consistently aimed at consumers. High-end cameras, sure, and Samsung's latest display technology, but packaged in something with a little more style. The thing is, over the years the demands of consumers have become more in line with what Samsung kept telling us about the demands of professionals.

As a result, the overlap has increased in recent generations. The latest Galaxy Note models always had larger displays and better camera technology, but the next Galaxy S flagship also had these innovations on board a few months later. With the screen sizes being nearly identical and Samsung adding S Pen support to the Galaxy S21 Ultra in 2021, questions as to why both phone series continue to exist have been growing louder.

Samsung has of course fueled the series discontinuation rumors itself, although they have traditionally been backed up with statements that there are no official plans to discontinue the Note series. The closest we came to direct confirmation was in July 2021, when TM Roh said there would be no new Galaxy Note at the company's traditional late 2021 event.

"Rather than unveiling a new Galaxy Note this time," Roh revealed, "we will be extending popular Note features to other Samsung Galaxy devices." While that hasn't finally closed the door to a future Note, it does seem to be the Galaxy S22 Ultra to end this discussion.

"We see the Note as an experience these days," said Drew Blackard, vice president of mobile produce management at Samsung America, ahead of today's big Galaxy Unpacked presentation. "We've built the Note experience into our PCs, our tablets and our foldable devices... From a device perspective, we see the S22 Ultra as the natural next step for a Note owner."

Of course, it's not hard to see the practical benefits for Samsung here. The ongoing crisis in the supply chain has led to bottlenecks in many areas, which not least restrict the production of mobile phones. The ability to focus this year on ensuring adequate coverage with just one top-of-the-line device instead of two seems to save Samsung management at least one headache.

At the same time, it paves the way for further expansion of the Note, as branding is no longer dependent on a specific phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 added S Pen support back in 2021, and it seems likely that Samsung will focus on boosting that for the foldable phone-tablet, which is expected to launch later in 2022 as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 market will come. Samsung is already touting the cross-device functionality of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and new Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra: the same S Pen works on both phone and tablet, while software improvements allow the S22 Ultra to act as a second screen for apps, running on the slate.

With the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, it seems that there will probably no longer be another pure Note model.
