Samsung makes Galaxy S22 range from recycled plastic
Businesses need to do much more to reuse and recycle their waste and reduce their impact on the environment. Most manufacturers have set various sustainability goals, including using recycled plastic and being carbon neutral.
While they have made steady progress in this regard, it is not enough. Now, Samsung has made a major breakthrough in sustainability, announcing that the company has developed a "new material" made from discarded fishing nets. The company will use this new material in its future devices, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, which will be launched later this week.
However, Samsung doesn't give any details on how or which plastics it will replace in its devices with this new material. Nonetheless, this step is another step in the company's effort to eliminate single-use plastics from its products. Back in 2019, the Korean smartphone maker promised to switch to more eco-friendly packaging for its products, such as recycled and bioplastic materials.
Citing a report by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, Samsung highlights in its announcement that up to 640,000 tons of fishing nets are discarded each year, destroying marine life and damaging coral reefs and other habitats. The Korean smartphone maker collects these fishing nets, which are discarded within a 50 km radius from the coast, and uses them on Galaxy devices to reduce their environmental impact and clean the oceans. The company says this is "an important first step in keeping our oceans clean and preserving our planet and our common future."
Considering Samsung's size and the sheer number of products it sells, this move should have a positive impact on the environment in the long term.
